The National Citizens Coalition strongly condemns the Liberal government’s decision to appoint and keep in place Gary Anandasangaree as Minister of Public Safety -- a role critical to Canada’s national security -- in light of the continued and deeply troubling revelations about his past actions and affiliations.

The breaking news that Anandasangaree wrote letters in 2016 and 2023 urging Canadian immigration officials to approve the application of an individual deemed to be a terrorist member of the Tamil Tigers, raises serious questions about his suitability for this vital portfolio.

“The public safety minister’s past consigliere efforts with the designated terror group should have kept him out of cabinet, let alone caucus. It represents a clear breach of public trust, and calls into question the early character of this government,” said NCC Director Alexander Brown.

Anandasangaree’s letters, written on House of Commons letterhead, downplayed CBSA’s evidence of Selvakumaran’s “protracted involvement” with a group notorious for assassinations, suicide bombings, and child soldier recruitment during Sri Lanka’s civil war. As a Tamil-Canadian with a history of advocacy for the Tamil community, including ties to organizations like the Canadian Tamil Congress, which Sri Lanka’s government has labeled a front group, Anandasangaree’s actions suggest a conflict of interest that undermines his impartiality. His decision to recuse himself from Tamil files only after public scrutiny further erodes confidence in his ability to oversee Canada’s counter-terrorism and border security apparatus, including agencies like the CBSA, RCMP, and CSIS.

The timing could not be worse, after Prime Minister Carney’s 16-page ethics disclosure, detailing extensive conflicts of interest from his time as a global banking executive and chair of a global net-zero extortion network, was finally revealed. "This document, conspicuously withheld during the 2025 election campaign, casts a shadow over the Liberal government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Canadians deserve a government that prioritizes their safety and trust, not another Liberal government mired in ethical controversies and questionable appointments,” said the NCC director.

“The NCC calls for Anandasangaree’s immediate resignation or removal as public safety minister. A minister responsible for national security must be beyond reproach, not sidelined from key terrorism files due to personal affiliations or past advocacy for individuals linked to banned terrorist groups.

“The Liberal era of rampant foreign interference and disloyalty to Canada must come to an end.”

Furthermore, the organization and its supporters demand a full public inquiry into Carney’s record-conflicts, for the sake of government integrity and day-to-day operational security. Canadians selected Mark Carney under the veneer of change and renewal, but the appointment of Anandasangaree and Carney’s hidden conflicts during the election demonstrate that this government deserves no benefit of the doubt. Trust must be earned. The NCC will continue to hold the Liberal government accountable and fight for a Canada where integrity, security, and loyalty to Canadians again comes first.
