Toronto, ON – National Citizens Coalition (NCC) Director Alexander Brown issued a sharp condemnation today regarding Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s renewed, aggressive rhetoric toward the United States, warning that hollow tough-talk threatens to dismantle Canada's economic stability.

As Canada’s premiers again gather under the shadow of punishing new American tariff threats, Ford aggressively claimed that Canada could “dismantle the U.S. if we wanted to” by cutting off Western Canada's vital oil and potash exports. This erratic attempt to play 'Captain Canada' relies entirely on commodities Ford does not control, masking a weak provincial track record that relies mostly on pulling American alcohol off retail shelves.

"Weaponizing the resources of neighbouring provinces is not diplomacy, nor is it his right," said Alexander Brown, Director of the NCC and the NCC's Ontarians for Responsible Government campaign. "Premier Ford has little leverage following years of growth stagnation in Ontario. Attempting to use Alberta’s oil and Saskatchewan’s potash as a cudgel in trade negotiations is a profound miscalculation."

Energy expert Heather Exner-Pirot outlined exactly why Ford’s proposed embargo is completely unfeasible in her comprehensive analysis on X. Exner-Pirot emphasizes that Canada lacks the pipeline infrastructure and storage capacity to redirect its crude oil. Halting these exports would inevitably force a complete shutdown of domestic production, costing Canada billions in essential revenues, royalties, and taxes while actively damaging western oil wells.

Furthermore, global energy stability is already strained by intense crises across the Strait of Hormuz, Russia, and Bab el-Mandab. Forcing an artificial embargo on millions of barrels of Canadian crude would trigger severe domestic and international economic pain. More importantly, it would completely shatter Canada's reputation as a reliable and trustworthy trade partner.

Stripping away goodwill by weaponizing crucial energy and fertilizer supplies is entirely counterproductive. This reality explains why Western Premiers Danielle Smith and Scott Moe immediately shut down Ford's proposal.

This belligerent bluster follows a bruising year of protracted trade disputes where Canadian leaders have consistently failed to secure a position of strength. The systemic lack of transparency from the federal government has compounded the crisis, exemplified by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s blatant lies regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge "bridge deal."

While Carney assured taxpayers that Canada would not share any toll revenues until its $6.4 billion construction debt was completely repaid, the newly released agreement in principle reveals the exact opposite. Canada is actively surrendering 50 percent of the bridge's net revenues to a United States-controlled economic development fund before a single cent of debt principal is serviced.

The adults in the room must strive to keep the high ground in complex international trade negotiations. Submitting to panic and trading away revenue on infrastructure deals while throwing empty, aggressive threats at our largest trading partner is a recipe for economic ruin. The National Citizens Coalition calls on Canada's leaders to abandon these failed tactics, drop the childish posturing, and return to a position of sober, calculated, and professional diplomacy.

Canadians need results, not more stunts.
