FERNANDO: The Hypocrisy Of Liberal Caucus 'Revolt'

Even If They Remove Trudeau, Liberal MPs Still Own The Fact That They Enabled Him For Years

Justin Trudeau is facing a serious threat to his leadership of the Liberal Party.

After repeated promises by the PM to the Liberal Caucus that they would start turning around their horrendous poll numbers, only for those numbers to worsen, Liberal MPs are getting desperate.

Some are even pushing to scrap the carbon tax along with scrapping Trudeau’s leadership of their party.

Unfortunately, recent reports indicate there is a distinct lack of political courage among possible anti-Trudeau rebels:

“Now, there are members of Trudeau’s own caucus — largely MPs from English-speaking Canada — who think it’s time to do what Poilievre’s Conservatives have been constantly calling for and “Axe the Tax.”

Global News spoke this weekend with many members of the Liberal caucus. Those who had something substantial to say about a mushrooming caucus revolt — either pro or con — preferred not to be quoted by name.

Indeed, one of those MPs seeking a leadership change said part of the problem is that there is almost no one seeking a revolt who will say so when the TV cameras are pointed at them.”

A lack of political courage perhaps best sums up a large portion of the Liberal Caucus in the Trudeau era.

Canada’s downward trend has been evident for years.

Justin Trudeau’s inability to lead this nation has been evident for years.

His effort to turn the Liberal Party from a centrist party into an NDP-style leftist party has been evident for years.

His desire to purge critics (like Jody Wilson-Raybould) and turn the Liberal Party into a personality cult centred around himself has been evident for years.

His ruination of Canada’s once-respected immigration system has been evident for years.

His instinct to divide rather than unite has been evident for years.

His overly lenient agenda on crime (which has made Canada a much more dangerous place) has been evident for years.

At no time did a critical mass of Liberals speak out.

At no time did a critical mass of Liberals push back.

At no time did a critical mass of Liberals defend their removed colleagues.

At no time did a critical mass of Liberals look at nearly every statistic notably worsening and say, “maybe it’s time for a change in leadership.”

In short, the mounting damage to our nation and crushing of the standard of living of Canadians wasn’t a dealbreaker for the Liberals.

All of that was just fine with them.

Instead, it was their fear of losing the next election – their own narrow political self-interest.

When Trudeau seemed like a political winner – no matter how much damage his agenda was doing to Canada – the Liberals enabled him.

They allowed their party to get hollowed out and turned into a personality cult, because they thought it would benefit them.

So now, their potential turn against the prime minister should not be seen as an act of courage or principle, but as an act of craven self-interest.

Consider for a moment how hypocritical it is for Liberal MPs to push for scrapping the carbon tax for political advantage when they’ve spent years demonizing the Conservatives for wanting to axe the tax.

How can you flip from claiming the carbon tax is necessary to stop the world from burning to now thinking it should be scrapped to try and salvage some Liberal seats in Parliament?

Remember, even if Trudeau goes, many of the Liberal MPs who enabled his agenda will remain in place and will be trying to distance themselves from the agenda they’ve been supporting for almost a decade.

And the fact that they enabled Trudeau for so long means they would allow themselves to go along with further ruinous policies down the road.

So, while it would certainly be a move in the right direction for Trudeau to be booted out by the Liberal Caucus, we should remember that most of those Liberal MPs deserve to be booted out in the next election as well.

Better to defeat them all on Election Day.
