Amid Unprecedented Crisis, The Potential Of FORTRESS CANADA Offers Us Hope

Everyday seems to bring a new disastrous headline:

“Stock market plunges.”

“Number of infected rises.”

“Lockdowns ordered.”

“Death toll rises.”

As the China Communist Party Coronavirus spreads around the world, our lives have been upended, our healthcare system is at risk, and the economy is facing devastation.

In this dark and disturbing time, it can be difficult to find hope.

But there is hope.

More and more people are realizing how vulnerable Canada is to what happens around the world, and are realizing that it doesn’t have to be this way.

A key idea growing in the minds of many is the idea of FORTRESS CANADA, a Canada that is self-sufficient, secure, able to defend our people, and is no longer dependent on foreign nations.

When we look at the facts, there is perhaps no other country on earth that has such great potential to be a self-sufficient fortress nation.

Our level of technology is high.

We are surrounded by either water, or a close ally on all our borders.

We have astounding resource wealth.

And the vast majority of our ‘foreign trade’ is with the United States, the world’s most powerful nation.

Simply put, there is zero reason Canada can’t emerge from this time of crisis as a self-sufficient country.

The idea of Fortress Canada means that we no longer import foreign oil, we no longer depend on countries like China for essentials like medical equipment and lifesaving drugs, and we no longer allow massive amounts of unrestricted travel from every corner of the globe.

A ‘Fortress Canada’ would ensure that only Canadian oil is used within Canada, would manufacture essentials here at homethrough a combination of tariffs, increased support for manufacturing employment, and an investment in robotic manufacturing – and would have strict border controls, including health testing for all entering the country from potential danger zones.

Some may claim that this would require too big an investment, but we have already seen that it is in fact more costly not to take these steps.

Instead of being ‘Fortress Canada,’ we have been ‘wide-open Canada,’ and the cost is now being paid in fear for the health of our loved ones, a devastated economy, the loss of our ability to even move freely within our own nation, and a sense of fear and restriction that has shocked our country.

All the supposed ‘gains’ and ‘benefits’ of endless globalization and ‘openness’ are being wiped out, meaning we got all the negatives – vulnerability, lost manufacturing, foreign control over key sectors, and a horrific pandemic – while getting none of the benefits, as the economic gains are being viciously decimated as you read these words.

A system shows its strength or weakness in a crisis, and the system of ‘openness’ and ‘globalization’ has been revealed to be weak beyond our worst nightmares.

That’s why the idea of Fortress Canada can give us all hope.

We can emerge from this terrible moment and look forward to a brighter, safer, and more secure future, a future in which our country fulfills our real potential, our Citizens are protected, and Canada is a haven for all who call this great nation home.
