Are the winds of change starting to blow in Ontario?

I have been wondering for a long time when the teflon would come off Premier McGuinty. With all of the scandals, government waste, arrogance and general mismanagement of Ontario it was only a matter of time before voters started to bite back at him. Well, the latest poll shows that this is starting to happen. McGuinty is now very unpopular on a personal level and his party is now neck and neck with the Progressive Conservatives. You can read an article about this poll here.

Politicians, just like house guests who stay too long, invariably hit a past-due date. They all do, no matter what party they belong to when they are in power. This time may be arriving for McGuinty sooner than he thought.

We fought very hard at the NCC with respect to the Hated Sales Tax (HST). We were one of the few groups who were on the side of over-taxed and over-governed Ontarian taxpayers who were deceived by their government. We knew there might be some positive impact for business - let’s hope there is, and those savings do get passed on to consumers… but do not hold your breath.  One interesting quote from McGuinty during the very brief HST debate was “if you don’t like it you can vote us out in 2011.” Well maybe, just maybe people in Ontario are going to take him up on his offer.

As we do in all provincial and federal elections, we will be putting forward concrete ideas about what should be on the agenda for Ontario. Stay tuned for some of that this fall. To begin, please read more about McGuinty’s record by clicking here. You can also click here to donate to our campaign to bring responsible government back to Ontario.

As usual your comments and thoughts are most welcome. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

Arrogance is the word along with double standard. The arrogant Dept. of Transportation gave me a three hundred dollar fine for not handing in my driver’s logs within twenty days. I was off work the previous week sick and the requirement is that you have fourteen days in your possession.I had twenty six days in my possession. I accused the officer of nit picking my logs to deliberately find fault with me. He claims I was erratic. Well Sir, respect and tolerance are a two way street. As a commercial driver I could tell you of life lost on Ontario roadways due to plain stupidity. People killed in construction areas because of lack of warnings and lane closures,A trucker killed because the salt trucks turned around at hwy’s fifty nine and nineteen on the four o one and did not salt between the two roadways on the 401. The last one was the bus from Kingston Ontario that hit a blunt divider that should not have been there. Who would put a concrete divider on a curve with five feet of looped guard rail as a cushion for impact. Well if the Government wants to find fault and steal money from me then I am going to find fault with them. They have been working on the Q.E.W. for forty six years. It is only about one hundred miles from Fort Erie to Toronto Ontario. There should be an inquirey into hwy contracts because I smell something rotten.

The present politicians have fed us nothing but lies.

In my opinion, this is a “legal” exploitation of common people, parading as a “tax law” and other bull…

We need more people like Ford, who are not afraid to call a spade a spade.

I applaud you and you have my vote Mr. Ford

I’d like to believe Ontarians are finally starting to get it. But how could it take so long? So much damage has been done. Ontarians can’t overcome the media and the high school mentality of liberalism. Can we trust the OPC to be conservative if elected? Or will it be as always? The compulsion of the OPC to be liberal and have everyone like them always ends up being the dominant theme. Santa Claus government is entrenched and expected. I have no doubt that the recommendations and ideas put forward by the NCC will be correct and the right thing to do. But will the OPC adopt them and stay on track? If history is our guide it’s not encouraging. The last OPC EDA meeting I was at last year proved to me they have learned nothing. All progressive and no conservative. The entitlement mentality of citizens is so deeply ingrained at this point that even if people currently believe they are tired of it they will quickly return to the status quo that has destroyed this once great province. Just give the media and unions enough time to wear everyone down. It works every time. Unfortunately we don’t have a populace as we see in America that wants limited government and personal responsibility. We’ll never see a popular uprising here in support of freedom. Canadians love their nanny state. Those of us opposed are a minority. Sorry to sound so negative. I hope to be proven wrong.

Keith says:

What bothers me, whether it be Ontario or any other province in Canada, are the promises made at election time that are broken after a party wins to be the government. This happens time and time again regardless if the governing party is Conservative, Liberal, or NDP. I don’t believe that I am going out on a limb to state that the promises made, and then broken, come under the catagory of being gross deception.

Canadians deserve better! What is needed provincially as well as federally is honesty in government, something that has been proven time and time again to be sorely lacking with too many of our “Honourable” MPs and MPPs.

I am afraid I agree with Don. The stupidity of the Ontario electorate is stunning. Whether at the federal or provincial level, they want the socialism, the entitlement programs, and the nanny state. I too would like to be optimistic but I don’t believe even for a moment that there will be sufficient opposition to McGuinty to make a difference. He can always count on a compliant and fawning media and public service unions to keep him in power. I just don’t see that ever changing and increasingly I don’t care. I am looking to get out of Ontario - you can have it.

Scurvy Dog says:

Its simply amazing that people actually took the time to vote for the Ontario Liberals. I for one, marched door to door towing the PC line because its sensible. Less taxes and efficient honest government!

People tell me all the time that they think taxes are too high but yet support wasteful governments that raise taxes because they always want something from the government. “What will government do for me”? They ask.

I really want only a few Government services so we can go about our daily lives without stepping on eggshells all the time. So when will people wake up and realize they have brain and therefore decide what they should do with their own money.

Why have a tax and spend politician decide for you and take a cut to themselves or one of their friends?

In priciple the GST does have merit. Here in B.C., Premier Campbell promised us the Government would not accept HST, he lied to us and brought it in.We are constantly being told the HST is good for us. Good for the corparate world but it is not good for we consumers.Campbells treachery may well cost him the next election.

Dan says:

So I see I’m not the only skeptic. The blame for our situation lays with the people and the apathy in regard to what the government does to us. Loving liberty and freedom is not a quality that is alive and well here I’m afraid. Again I admire the people in the US that are standing up and pushing back in spite of the media ridicule and marginalizing. I could only dream that Ontarians would wake up and fight for what so many have died for in the past. It seems the exchange of freedom for supposed insurance against any possible failure and trinkets from the government have more appeal than freedom. People used to know these basic truths. I’m not sure Canadians deserve better Keith. We get the government we deserve. All that is wrong in our country was sanctioned by a majority of the electorate. Any thinking person knew McGuinty was a liar before he was elected.
