Federal MP’s recess for the summer

As they head back to their ridings for the summer BBQ circuit, one has to really wonder what has been accomplished in the spring session of Parliament. Continued debate over the Afghan detainee documents seemed to be the dominating theme, along with the exhorbitant costs of the G8 and G20 summits. Let’s hope that federal MP’s actually get the wax out of their ears and listen to what their constituents’ issues are - because I can assure you that Afghan detainee censored documents are not even on the radar of the vast majority of Canadians.

Issues like jobs and pensions are the things that mostĀ normal ‘Ma and Pop’ people care about. They want to see government accountability with their hard-earned tax dollars. Let’s hope that the fall session of Parliament becomes more productive.

As an aside, it looks like the on-again-off-again Coalition talks with the Liberals and NDP are back on. You can read an article about it here. Sure will be an interesting summer for Michael Ignatieff. If he is looking over his shoulder - and he should be - he will likely be seeing that snake in the grass Bob Rae. He was nothing but poison for Ontario and now wants to spread his socialist nonsense across the country!

Enjoy the first day of summer next week - we will continue to blog on issues of interest. As usual, your comments are welcome. Have a great weekend.

G. Bright says:

Bob Rae will eventually wrench the Liberal leadership away from “his friend” Ignatieff and when he does, he will work to merge with his old party the NDP. It is doubtful that a good many members of either party will manage to stomach that. I believe and hope that such a merger will lead to a Conservative majority government.

We certainly never got our money’s worth from this last session. What an effin joke we have become.
How about we put Ottawa on a “pay for performance”?

Keith says:

The Afghan detainee issue has been flogged to death, time to move on. Canadians will never know the whole truth about who knew and when they knew because it is a given that to many of our honourable (tongue in cheek)elected MPs and MPPs have a tendency to not tell the truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth. One thing that is certain, which I haven’t seen stated, is that all parties knew or should have known that when Afghan detainees were turned over to the Afghan authorities some would be tortured. It should not have taken a modern day Einstein to figure this out.

My concern as a Canadian is that our governments, whether federal or provincial, all too often spend our money recklessly with no regard for the needs of everyday Canadians. The G8 and G20 is a very good example.

It is going to be very interesting to see what the Auditor General finds when she examines the books.

The Parliamentary Soap Opera will continue in the fall, so stay tuned.

John says:

Ignatieff thinks that Parliament is his theatre stage. He should, rather than wasting our money travelling around the country, join the Bolshoi Theatre and get a permanent job. He could take along his Coalition buddies as clowns.

Dan says:

The last thing the opposition want is a government that works when they themselves are not “ruling”. It should be a relief that these bozos are off for the summer. They can’t do as much damage that way. Sad that it’s that way for all Canadians but it is.

DougB says:

I think the best that we can hope for, is undercooked hamburger. Perhaps if there are not so many politicians, when they do return, we might be better off (especially after they find out that our health system is not all that they say it is).

My biggest concern, is that, over the summer, the people of Canada are likely to forget just how stupid politicians (of all types) are. Thanks to the NCC, somebody is watching those idiots, and informing the people.

grenadier says:

The big problem is the Bloc, which has far too many seats because it is a regional party. Regional parties should NOT be allowed to participate in a NATIONAL election. They can elect members with a very small proportion of votes. EVERY party should have to run candidates in EVERY riding.

Gerry Nicholls says:

Grammar lesson: the plural of MP is “MPs” not “MP’s”, which is possessive. You make this mistake in all your writings.
