Premier McGuinty finally tells the truth about the HST- and it is not pretty!

After hiding from taxpayers for months, Premier McGuinty is now admitting the real impact of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) that we refer to as the Hated Sales Tax. You can read an article about this by clicking here.

He is finally admitting what we at the National Citizens Coalition have known since this tax was first discussed- it is going to hit hard working Ontarians in the pocket book. He is saying that the average household will pay $792 more in tax. This is why we fought so hard with our Stop the HST campaign last fall.

Here is a laughable quote - Premier McGuinty says “For families, at the outset there will be an increase in taxation.” Does he really think we are that stupid? This tax will cost families more money every year. He talks about the rebates for the first two years- they will not offset the increased tax, and then after two years we will all be stuck paying more tax.

Sadly, Premier McGuinty just continues to say things that he knows are not true. When he first proposed the tax and its supposed benefits he asserted the tax would be “revenue neutral.” Yeah right!

I sure hope voters in Ontario do not forget this next year when it comes time to decide who will become the next Premier of Ontario.

What are your thoughts?

Yawn* Wake up Ontario! Remember 2003? “I will not raise your tax a penny?” Something like that. Health tax Premium which is a tax was implemented and we pay an average of $600 more on just that meanwhile there are scandals including the big 1 Billion Ehealth program.

Now this HST scheme may be better with reducing paper work, but the hit to us, the End User, is huge. I wont be out spending money as much just to control my finances. What about the folks who have a hard time already? And the household debt that keeps increasing? Not good for those people down the road.

Garry Dicks says:

Mr. McGuinty has been lying to the people of this Province for years. I seem to remember his election platform saying something about “no new taxes”. Well, his record speaks for itself.

As for next years elections, I too hope the people of the Province of Ontario remember the tax grabs of his Government. Unfortunately, I’m not overly optimistic about it, as he currently has a majority government and I haven’t found a single person who admits voting for him.

Should he be returned to power, Heaven help us all.

Chris Holdroyd says:

McGuinty rarely makes decisions without a lot of upfront research. He must have known the HST was going to cost us back in the fall. I have no trust for this leader.

Now we will be stuck with a tax that vastly increases a lack of transparency on what goes into these tax components. Why should the Feds ever reduce the GST when it’s blended? Same for Mcguinty in raising our Provincial taxes. It’s easier to bury a 1% increase on 13% than on 8%.

The Premier does not know how we working class families have to juggle our lives and budget our grocery bills to make ends meet. He taxed us on healthcare and now HST. We sure need a change in Government who will work for ordinary families.

Jaxon says:

I’m in favour of the HST in principle, but the rate should be lowered. It makes no sense to have two parallel but slightly different sales taxes.

By harmonizing, we should be able to reduce the size of government by wiping out one of the bureacracies associated with administrating the tax.

We can also reduce the paperwork for all businesses. I’m very familiar with trying to run a medium sized business operating in different provinces with different rules in each. Streamlining the processes would greatly improve the efficiency of our economy as a whole.

The trouble is, that both BC and Ontario are wrapping this up into a big tax grab. I think that harmonizing should be done, but the efficiency should be passed onto the consumer via a lower combined rate.

CanGyrene says:

The term “Revenue Neutral” is bandied about by politicians everywhere, most recently McGuinty and Obama, without even the faintest understanding of what they are saying. It is a smoke screen by incompetent liars designed to dupe incompetent citizens - after all - the educational system produces graduates who are very nearly illiterate, and it is natural for such as McGuinty to assume that few read the Press (another disastrous area of incompetents) and only watch CBC - who have pandered to the Liberals since day One. Result - no one does anything, and the citizens get screwed again. Look at Dexter in Nova Scotia - a fragile economic recovery - and he RAISES HST by two percentage points!!!

Our politicians continue to disappoint - all of them! They are lucky that Canadians are much more complacent than perhaps, the citizens of Greece. How much abuse can a Canadian take before he rises to action? At the rate things are going in Toronto, Ontario and Canada we may get to find out but I suspect it will take a lot more shovelfuls being dumped on us before we find out.

Sadly, neither the NDP (Andrea Horwath) nor the PC’s (Tim Hudak) will commit - if elected - to repeal the HST. They have all sorts of reasons but none of them are legitimate. Yes, once it’s implemented we are locked-in for a while…but it could be cancelled as of a given date and all the extra revenue raised in the meantime could be used to pay back the Federal bribe money. And if the PC’s were to announce their position right now, it MIGHT (small chance) have some influence on McGuinty’s plans.

This is a bad tax at a bad time……

This is all about putting money in to fill all the holes the McGuinty govt has created with their wasteful spending habits. McGuinty continuously opens the doors to new immigrants that, without stereotyping, search for a govt office looking for handouts before looking for work. And who pays for all this? The taxpayers. And who keeps voting in McGuinty? Well, I’m sure all these freeloading newcomers help tip the election in the Liberals’ favour. No matter how many times McGuinty has failed us, robbed from us and wasted all our hard earned money we keep voting him in. It is time to run McGuinty and all his friends out of the country but making sure they leave the billions they stole from us behind.

WAKE UP MR. MCGUINTY. Do you have any idea of what the impact will be on everyone. The proposed $1000 compensation for this new tax is not going to help any of the Ontarians. The prices for things and costs of living will go up substantially and you do not give low income families enough to afford this. I myself who has been on the system before realizes that the average cost for a 3 bedroom is over one thousand dollars a month plus utilities. There will be more tax on utility costs and you do not bother to raise the amount that people are entitled to a month when they seeking financial assistance from the government. This extra thousand for ONE YEAR is only a drop in the bucket. The government continuously screws with Ontarians and then wonders why the homeless population is on the rise. Get with the program.

I think I have paid pretty close attention to the introduction of the HST in Ontario. I do not ever recall anyone in government at Queen’s Park ever uttering the words “revenue neutral”.

I work in the financial services industry. Several economists have estimated that the HST rate would have to be somewhere in the 6.25-6.50% range for the HST to actually be “revenue neutral” without the bureaucracy of rebate cheques and the like.

At 8%, as we know, the HST is nothing short of a blatant tax grab.

Warren says:

We need re-call legislation in Ontario (and Canada), specifically to cull out & dump politicians who lie on the hustings or while in office, or who commit gross negligence. (I know. We risk ending up with no politicians!)

To have labelled HST as “tax neutral”, if not a lie, was “gross negligence” based on the reality of what is now taxable.

They knew they would be making hundreds of items tax exigible that were not previously subject to either GST or PST, but still stuck to their “tax neutral” mantra.

Liberals are trying to blame Harper for the treachery of HST (his concept: their dishonesty), which is another lie.

Mr. McGuinty had an opportunity to really make the HST introduction “Revenue Neutral”, as he originally stated, by simply reducing the % rate of Provincial portion of the HST to 5 or 6%, to reflect the extra money about to flow into Provincial coffers, to be frittered away on questionable spending.
He chose not to do that.
I know how I’m voting next election.

McGinty is a damn liar and should be thrown out of office. All costs associated to running a business has to be included in the selling price of the service or product. If future business’s save money by not paying some taxes now, why will they pass the savings down to the consumer?
McGinty has increased the public service by about 40% since he has been in office and squandered tax dollars on grants, more social services that the taxpayer cannot afford, e health $1 billion waste plus plus plus.
The ONtario Govt. will take in billions of tax dollars by the time, if ever whenanother 600,000 jobs will be created as forcast by some economists. An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn’t happen today.
Government cannnot be trusted. Politicians cannot be trusted.
Some drastic action on the part of taxpayers has to take place before politicians and government realize they can no longer spend and tax our hard earned dollars. Just think the politicians walk away with good pensions and benefites after their term of service regardless of whether the country/province is deep in debt.
I am one angry, fed up and really pissed off taxpayer.

It shows at the federal level as well. Do they not understand that the more they rely on Government services and handouts the more the tax burden will go up. Vote for those who will reduce Government spending. It is the most sustainable way to eliminate deficits, reduce taxes, and pay down debts.
Who is really benfiting from high taxes?

Bob Sleeth says:

First of all I do believe that a harmonized sales tax makes much sense and benefits should be realized in administration and collection not only for government but also for businesses large and small. We are also faced with a huge deficit and the facts are that only taxpayers will pay for it. However I do have difficulty with the manner in which all of this is communicated to us. This government is not upfront in their communications and leave us all very skeptical. Not only has there been the HST issue but also the sex education issue. McGinty backed down because of pressure from the religious right and did not do the right thing for Ontario families with school children. Yes, we will have an election next year and we can take the necessary action to vote the present government out, but heaven help us, what is the alternative ? Sad to say not much choice.

Cam Walker says:

Everbody hated Brian Mulrooney for inaugurating the GST, but at least he eliminated the specious Manufactures’ Tax which was largely passed on to the consumer without his knowledge, thereby making the fiscal result relatively neutral. But this HST is painfully different in that it will hit the pocketbook of Johnny Canuck dreadfully. He,on July 1st, will be totally blindsided. We obtuse Ontario voters get exactly what we deserve.

submitted on May 5th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Part of the problem Bob Sleeth is the pathetic media we suffer from. Their political agenda and ideology trump all else. And we know what politics our media subscribe to and support. The bias is so thick I get ill looking at it drip off them. The press does not do a very good job of informing the people. If Conservatives were in power we would be getting an ear full everyday. But because the media and public sector unions like the teachers are happy it goes by like another day in paradise. Where’s the outrage? Sometimes I wonder if we’re past the point of no return.

Jordan Charbonneau says:

Bob Sleeth is right: the HST will reduce paperwork and costs for businesses (some run by Ontarians) and the associated bureaucracy. In addition, ALL Ontarians will benefit in the long-run by the increased economic activity that results from the streamlining of the tax system.

Mr. Coleman’s message, while hiding a good message (concern about the citizens of Ontario - why is it that they always say families?), is unhelpful in its tone, adopting the attitude of a sore loser in this policy debate.

Mr. McGuinty is so reluctant to say anything about the costs because of exactly the sort of comments on this board: people are not willing to believe him even when he tells the truth, nor are they willing to believe the evidence put forth supporting this sound policy decision. It’s a real shame that the NCC, which should be supporting such decision, has decided to look at only the short term costs of this unpopular, but important, decision.

Governments produce nothing. Even government employees produce nothing. They are included in the list of taxable Canadaians, but ALL that tax revenue is generated from private sources and comes from taxpayers. The more money that is taken away from private enterprise, the less private enterprise will produce and the fewer jobs that are created.

It’s time we all realized that the great socialist dream of Pierre E. Trudeau has produced a nation whereby half the population is dependent on tax money. The other half, those who are responsible, work and pay taxes are, in effect, slaves to the government and to the recipients.

Why is it that government workers in federal, provincial, or municipal jobs make 10% to 40% more in wages and benefits than workers doing comparable jobs in the private sector when they PRODUCE NOTHING and work for us?

Remember, for every $1 any level of government takes from taxpayers, over 75% goes to wages and benefits. The rest goes to waste!

There are over 400,000 federal employees. Who needs them? They should all be outsourced!

What a scam.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a code of ethics for politicians that if they were caught in a lie that this would mean automatic expulsion from political office. There is no shame with so many of our politicians, they just keep lying and deceiving without batting an eye.

If the truth were known I wonder how much government waste is happening unbeknown to Canadians? We found out in Nova Scotia that members of all of the political parties were involved in the abuse of taxpayer money and the only consequences was an apology and a paying back of the amount of purchases made at taxpayer expense.
