Human Rights Commissions continue to show they need to be abolished

Have you heard the joke about a stand up comedian being heckled by people in the crowd and then heckling back? Sorry- in this case it is not a joke!! Do not know if you have been following the most recent farce of a Human Rights complaint in British Columbia. You can read the article here to get up to speed on the twisted world of Human rights commissions in Canada.

The part of this story that is not laughable at all is that the comedian is out of pocket $20,000 so far in fighting this issue. The complainant, on the other hand, is free to file the complaint while the taxpayers - that means you and I - have to fund this nonsense.

Heckling is a part of live comedy, and comedians are used to being heckled – constantly yelled at and abused they sure have the ability to fire back. That is what people who go to watch live comedy expect. Oh, no not in this case, Ms. Pardy’s feelings were hurt and she wants thousands of dollars in damages to heal those hurt feelings. Forget it! I have no idea what went on but can only assume there were insults being thrown back and forth and it culminated with Ms. Pardy throwing a glass of water in the comedian’s face.

The glass of water needs to be thrown at these kangaroo courts called Human Rights commissions. They need to be eliminated and the waste of taxpayers’ money needs to stop. We have been pressing hard on this issue for a long time and will continue to do so until our federal and provincial governments enact legislation to eliminate or curtail these speech police tribunals.  You can read more about our Stop the Speech Police campaign by clicking here.

Chris says:

This is actually little different from the Ann Coulter saga. As a nation, we are seen - certainly by the US - as immature and so politically correct that our sensitivities cannot take any view outside what is seen as “mainstream.” Real freedom of speech means we have the confidence to laugh off what is seen as fringe points of view, and real maturity means we can distinguish what is comedy from what is actually “hate.” Hate, by the way, is Israeli Aparheid week at York University, officiallly endorsed by university admiinistration and faculty. Hate is being a holocaust denier. Amd I would submit that “hate” is letter writing from academia opposing the granting of scholarships to the offspring of soldiers who die in the line of duty, while the offspring of the letter writers routinely receive free tuition. Hate is not - when you’re a comedian - making fun of your audience while you’re the standup act.

Somewhere along the line, we became super sensitive. Our feeble and fragile sensitivities are busy always being “offended.” We have a whole industry devoted now to encourage people to “be offended.” When will we grow up? When will we stop letting the inmates be in charge??

Tony Powell says:

I agree. The courts are more qualified to protect the freedoms enshrined in the Charter than the members appointed to the various Human Rights Commissions.

It is only natural that the Commissions attract persons who are on the left fringe of political correctness, unlike judges who, although appointed, are not(for the most part).

Mark says:

Please…tell me this is a joke.
Is this all the bureaucrats at the Human Rights commission can do with their time…and our money!?!?
The silly woman through water on the man for Pete’s sake!!
She and her partner were being stridently disruptive.
The venue was operating as an open mic comedy club for the evening.
That means that the audience are participants…like it or not!
This is…sadly… another example of sandbox rhetoric that is all too prevalent in Canada.
End this and get on with issues that are more productive.
“I’d like to help you out….which way did you come in?”
Ta dump!

Human Rights Commissions?
Another example of how Political Parties of all stripes have screwed up this country for the last 40-50 years.

Gerald Hutchison says:

The courts are fully capable of handling such non issues as this.
The money wasted on HRC’s should be redirected to the courts where at least
each party is held liable for costs rather than only the accused. Also, there is rule of law and admission of eveidence. The HRC’s across the Country are being used by special interest groups to intimidate people to
follow the politically correct version of “free speech’.

Commenter Chris above: You nailed the reality of HRC’s & the reason they were created.

They represent just one of the many Nanny State concepts created & implemented by liberals & Liberals that we, the taxpayers, must fund.

I wonder how long it will take before the Loony Left decides that blogs such as this must restrict postings to people who add their actual name & contact info, ie, no pseudonyms? Just another way of controlling thought. So get ready for this issue to make an appearance at the federal, or some provincial HRC. Watch for it soon, at a “kangaroo court” near you!

TW Childs says:

Lets get real… The unqualified FACT is that the Jennifer Lynches of this world, along with Goebels, Dzerzinsky, Stalin, Chavez and arguably the Obama thugs, all have one thing in common: a serious sociopathic inability to recognize that they have not adjusted rationally during their infancy. There is a great deal of existing developmental psychology that pin points the problem of totalitarians as being simply mentally ill. More clinically, it is based on the incapacity of the child during its first 8 years to recognize and adjust to the basic terms of adult relationships, and the resulting demanding and unilateral child-like incapacity to relate to society. In a word sociopathic. Until we are able to eliminate the poisonous fog of “Politically Correct” behavior and modes of address, we have not a chance of eliminating the Lynches, Chavez, Castros and Obama-style personalities from our societies. That means we sink ever deeper into the sucking swamp of tyranny.

Gays and Lesbians have a right to practice their lifestyle but a person should also have the right to disagree with their lifestyle without being labelled homophobic and be carted before the Human Rights Commission. If being made fun of because of ones lifestyle means the Human Rights Commission becoming involved then it is time to get rid of the Human Rights Commission. I have been made fun of for my Christian beliefs over the years but I just shrugged it off and just consider this as their opinion and left it at that.

Albert Kuyerhuis says:

Like it or lump it but the problem goes deeper than the Canadian Human Rights bodies. It is worldwide, championed by the United Nations. Countries are signatories to international treaties based on U.N. resolutions and therefore under an obligation to enact such laws.

Now let’s have a closer look at the U.N.’s membership. The majority of those members are dictatorships to varying degrees. Yet, democratic countries such as Canada bow to the wishes of U.N. resolutions. Should we?

The best we can hope for, me thinks, is to remove the sharp edges of Human Rights laws and legislation but meanwhile take every politician to task who has a high view of the U.N. in its current shape. We should NEVER make commen cause with dictators, they do not deserve a vote, not at the U.N., not anywhere. We owe that much to those who fell for Canada on our behalf in WWI and WWII.

So many people have ‘thin skins ‘ and we now have this expensive ‘court’ to protect them. If you don’t want to listen just get up and leave. Funny ?? even people thousands of miles away ( muslims ) can’t take a joke. Too bad, maybe we don’t need them here in our free country. How do you sort out the tolerant from the fanatics ? Very hard, just easier to keep them out of Canada. Do I have a thin skin, I hope not and if we don’t wake up soon we could end up with a reverse of what the silent majority believe in and fought for. I stand up for Canada and freedom of thought.

Dan says:

Without free speech we are finished. The chill on any speech that is not in full support of the left wing multi culti socially engineered and approved type is already heavily enforced with political correctness. HRC’s are the next logical step for anti freedom loving types to punish and intimidate. How far can they go? This battle is not a new one but the momentum from the Coulter visit has brought international attention to this encroachment on our freedoms and a new opportunity for us to strike while the iron is still hot. Doug Finley and Mike Duffy are giving it some attention now as well in the Senate. If we lose this I’m afraid it’s only a question of time before all of the rights we’ve taken for granted will be gone. It’s time for Canadians to wake up and get off their lazy rear ends and fight this with all they’ve got. Once it’s gone just try to get it back. The blood spilled to win those rights for us was plenty. We owe it to those that sacrificed and those coming up behind us.

I don’t really care about the comedian or the heckler. They were just two people at the extreme end of our social spectrum doing weird late night things. What I object to is using my tax money to arbitrate their silly shenanigans. That we actually let our government set up means to intervene in this type of trivia says a lot about us and not the government.

We don’t need “Thought Police” or Speech Police” in this country contrary to what some people may think. BRAVO! You hit the nail on the head! The UN is actually far deeper into our problems with totalitarian and anti-liberty forces - in its origination of the IPCC and master-minding the outrage of Human CO2 producing Climate Warming. Dig into ANY of the various multitude of UN agencies etc. and you find an ugly ideological story - ALL of which are targeted on Democracies and Freedom. You’re very correct Mr. Kuyerhuis - those who support the UN support the HRC, Lynch, Chavez, etc. And to NO GOOD!

Hugh Campbell says:

People seem to miss the point that sensitivity is a virtue but touchiness is a vice. Much of the politically correct agenda is touchiness. We are spending millions of tax dollars on the warped touchiness of warped people who have that vice.
The sooner the HRC is done away with the better. It is unlikely that anything but a conservative majority government has any hope of doing that. We also need property rights but Bill M320, I think it was, was twice voted down as it was conservative Nina Grewals private members bill. HRC reform will undoubtedly get the same treatment and too few care enough about the HRC for the Consevatives to risk making it an election issue, I am pretty sure about that.

Bruce Carson says:

I’m sure it would be difficult to find any NCC member who is not opposed to these Orwellian Commissions. The question is how to get politicians to move on this issue. They are (quite rightly) afraid of the liberal media’s headlines (Harper or Campbell or whoever against Human Rights!). The only way they’ll move is if they’re deluged with emails from constituents. I’ve written to Murray Coell in my riding, but have not received any commitment from him to make any effort to put an end to this travesty. Feel free to send him a note with your thoughts (”Coell.MLA, Murray” ,
I’m also sure that Guy Earle, the comedian being dragged in front of this kangaroo court would appreciate a few words of support (and probably a donation or two for his legal bill). Here’s his website. It will give you some idea of what he’s been going through. http://www.guyearle.ca/

My Husband and I recently read a book by Ezra Levant called “Shakedown” I think that every taxpayer in Canada should read this book. It is all about Ezra’s experience with the Human Rights Commission as well as other cases that Taxpayers foot the bill for. This Commission is an outright scam and should be shut down now. Our Society has become too politically correct and it needs to be stopped!

Jim Allan says:

The word “Rights” has become a travesty of integrity, and a means of semantic manipulation in Canada over the past 40 years.
Canadian/Provincial Human Rights Commissions, without a proper Judge and jury, without proper court procedings, and with an imbalanced requirement for responsibilities stacked against the accused who is considered guilty until proven innocent, fly right in the face of what used to be Canadian justice.
The same can be said of “Rights” in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, so called, which lists rights, without a single word of related responsibilities or the right to own land.

Richard Pentreath says:

So much damage has been done to fair play and common sense in the name of “human rights”. On both sides of the Atlantic there are armies of salaried officials processing this pap, then imposing judgments that are not only laughable and ridiculous but also downright damaging to the common man’s faith in society and good governance. Let us now abolish the whole concept of “human rights” - and replace it with a new movement called “fair play with common sense”. By this means, 95% of the cases in the pipeline would be thrown out, and millions of dollars would be saved in staff costs. But more importantly, those crass and idiotic judgments that make our blood boil would never see the light of day. Why? Because common sense would be in there too.

For those unfamiliar with the dark trilogy of the HRCs, read Ezra Levant’s Book “Shakedown”. He explains how these soviet star chambers held him under investigation for hate speech subject to prosecution for 800 days and cost him $100K in legal bills. All for publishing the Danish Mohamed cartoons in his magazine - a freedom guaranteed by section 2 of the charter, a free press.

The HRC process is punishment whether you are exonerated or not. It is set up to fiscally cripple you defending against a frivilous charge then shake down people for big bucks on pure hear-say and the unprovable claims of hurt feelings. It’s a con and the con attracts scammers and racketeers to it.

The issue was in front of a Conservative-led justice committee review of HRCs but this stalled after prorogue for some nebulous reason.

Write your MPs and tell them there is NO issue more important than free speech and HRCs have to go.

This Commission is not just a waste of tax dollars. As you noted the comedian is out $20K and the owner of the bar is going under because of this rediculousness.
My son-in-law ran a forestry business and when the woman who he hired was found unable to do the work–it was phyically too demanding– he let her go. She laid a complaint against him and then the fun started. He spent 4 days in Victoria after numerous letters and lawyers involvement defending himself and lost 4 days work, which he couldn’t afford and case was finally dropped. It was a charade. A costly one for him let alone us taxpayers.

Freedom of speech? Who are the real phobics?

Gays and lesbians get all the protection. They are allowed to say what they want, call people names (homophobics) and even assault others as is the case in point. But when the tables are turned, they hightail it off to the inhuman commission for attention where they get alot of press. Bingo, their goal is accomplished. More media exposure, more sympathy and a step closer to public acceptance and educational rights to teach their philosophy and influence our children.

It’s a joke that a “Human Rights” tribunal should have any jurisdiction to judge anyone in a democracy that is equipped with criminal code and a justice system to enforce those laws! It’s much worse than a joke that our taxes pay for these self-important paper tigers to insult and even injure us. They’re a power unto themselves that I’m sure must be illegal when we have a court system with the authority to hear a case and ultimately pass judgement. Abolish them I say! They remind me of the way “justice” was done in the USSR.
