Time for real transparency, not partisan games

The latest news out of Ottawa on the transparency front is more of the same. Transparency from government is required, especially on the heels of non-stop revelations of careless spending at all levels of government.  It is encouraging that some MPs are publicly supporting the idea of transparency, and this should be a no-brainer. You can read an article about this issue here.  It would take a negligible amount of time for MPs to post even their office expenses online – they are meant to organize and report these expenses to parliament anyways, right?

Here is the problem: the parliamentary board of internal economy (an all-party board of MP’s) holds the final say on this issue. Despite what might be expedient for party leaders at the moment – for example Ignatieff and Duceppe today claiming that they want to open their books – MPs would really rather we didn’t review their expenses. Recent scandals have stirred up a journalistic fervor that has politicians fearing to be in the spotlight next. In other words, they won’t do it themselves. That is why we have started a Transparency Initiative at the NCC – you can see it on our website here! You can see who the political ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ are in your region, and even email them directly. Visit our website and show our politicians that we are watching them even if they don’t approve of it. If we as citizens truly demand transparency, our government will have to start delivering. It is our money they are spending!

Please donate to the NCC and help us continue to expand this Canada-wide effort. Greater transparency will deliver greater value for money in all areas of government.

The Champions are Integrity are the Conservatives. This is a no brainer to make Government more accountable. If PMSH can make changes and toughen up the expenses from his own gang, then he will win again. It seems so senseless not to improve Gov. I sure hope that dont have that air of arrogance and entitlement that the libs had after their majority days in power. PMO, please just run a reality check and impress us all.

Dear N,C,C. I would like to have every politician in Ottawa be made to explain their expenses and why they voted the way they did. We put these monkeys in office and we should get our just and fair value for all the time, money and effort we spend on them. It is, after all, our money they are spending and we should make them account for it.

I would find it hard to believe that what has been exposed by the auditor general of Nova Scotia in regards to abuse of tax payer money is not happening federally as well. Not one MLA in Nova Scotia has been found criminally responsible, all they have been made to do is to pay for the items they bought. I would question why a MLA would agree to pay for the items they purchased at tax payer expense if the items in question were purchased legally. The auditor general is doing a further investigation to see if there is some criminal intent, but there has been nothing mentioned further, which leads me to believe that the matter might have been dropped. If our elected federal and provincial politicians have nothing to hide then why would they object to an audit by the federal auditor general? Me thinks that some have something they want to hide.

It would be helpful to learn more about the “Board of Internal Economy!!For example, on the 10% er issue, Why did all the Tory Members vote “No”? If that board reaches a (non Partisan)decision, how can so many ignore it? I wrote my MP about it (Tory Member) furious with what they did. I want to know WHO made the decision which they all followed, like sheep. No Party discipline. It is shameful and I am going to push the matter higher.

Frank Gue says:

Last fall I emailed Mike Wallace, our MP, to the effect that:

When a Legislature instructs the Executive to do something,
the Executive MUST COMPLY.

This goes to the basic Webster’s definition of democracy;
it is a system of government in which THE PEOPLE ARE
SUPREME. “Supreme” is the word used. It means what it
says. The will of the people (represented by Parliament,
yes, with all its warts) is superior to that of the Executive
and indeed of the Supreme Court.

The news here is about Jack Layton opposing an audit to investigate MP expenses. They claim an audit has not been done since 91 so actually I am in favour of the audit. Lets see how well the Cons hold up.
