MP’s get it right on 10 Percenters

We were glad to see MP’s vote in favour of eliminating the 10% mailers, which were initially intended to be used to inform people in an MP’s home riding about issues that relate to goings on in government.

The problem is that these mailers were used by all federal parties only to slag each other. The worst part, however, is that these mailings were allowed to be sent to other ridings across the country. Based on the tradition of being able to send out  mailers for the equivalent of 10% of the voters in your riding to any riding across the country, this was a constant waste of tax dollars. You can read an article about this here.

Much like Question Period is becoming, these mailers degenerated into typical Ottawa mudslinging by all parties. We have advocated for some time to get rid of these mailers and are happy that this might finally be done. The savings would amount to around $10 million a year. While this is only a start when compared to the bloated federal budget, every little bit of expense reduction is welcome news to the over burdened taxpayer.

As usual your comments are welcome.

Ed Korhonen says:

As a Conservative, it bugs me that the biggest offenders and the Party that voted to defeat the bill was my own Party.

I like the current government a lot better than the last Liberal government, but no government is perfect. Keep up the good work!

Robert Harper says:

The problem is not sending mailers to other ridings. The more the better. The problem lies with who pays for it. Taxpayers should not be paying for it. This is why I was disappointed that the Conservatives dropped the idea of ending public financing of political parties.

DougB says:

It is a sad day when MPs can’t inform their constituents about what is going on in Parliament. What is even worse, is that the MPs don’t have the basic horse sense to use that privilege properly. I regularly get mail from my MP, with some of the most disgusting things printed on it, and none of it has anything, at all, to do with what parliament is doing, it is all about how bad the “other” parties are. I would seriously consider switching parties at the next election, except the other options are so completely out of touch with reality that the only viable option is the Conservatives. Unfortunately, they too are very much out of touch with reality. Hopefully, the NCC can keep the pressure on, until they ALL smarten up (bet they don’t).

Two comments, that seem to be appropriate:

Giving money and power to politicians is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

If politicians are so smart, why is it that they keep on proving that they are not?

Keith1940 says:

In the past when I received a mailer, regardless of what party, I would send them in with my comments which went something like this: “You are just doing this to put down the …party and to try and build up your party. If you were the governing party you would be doing the same thing as the…party.”

Warren says:

With an incredibly biased and left-leaning Mainstream Media in Canada, I’m not surprised that the Conservatives used the mailers as their own policy bulletins and critiques of the Opposition.

This media imbalance also explains PM Harper’s Youtube interview recently, more frequent press conferences by the Government and the use of advertising by the Tories to get out their message.

How about a Bill in the HOC to eliminate Question Period? Now there’s a waste of taxpayer money if ever there was one. QP has degenerated into nothing more than a slanging match and fodder for the likes of the Toronto Star, CBC & CTV, each of which adds its own anti-Government slants & rants to the “News” from Ottawa.

D. Ludtke says:

If the Liberals, NDP and Bloc are so concerned about Ottawa spending money foolishly, then why were they so upset (to the point of replacing an elected government)when the conservatives suggested stopping payments to political parties???????

Bob says:

I was pleased with your initiative on zero-based budgeting. In fact, zero-based government would be a good idea. This would mean a re-evaluation of all programs over time and preferably a short time. Zero-based government really means representative government, i.e., government that truly represents what the people want. At present, whether Conservative (or conservative), Liberal (or liberal) or New Democrat (or socialist)our government is all ideologically driven. The big breakthru we need is zero based government. The party that finds a way to get my input and those of my fellow Canadians into what they proposed to do rather than their ideological positions is the one that will get my vote.

Disgusting show by conservatives MPs. A chance to forget party lines and vote to save money & everyone of them failed the test!

Blaine Carrington says:

Grammar alert!

The headline should read: “MPs Get it Right” no apostrophe. Same for the first sentence, unless you are talking about only one MP.

Also interesting is the fact that you don’t point out that the Tories voted in favour of these mailers … but of course that might be construed as criticism of PM Harper, and we can’t have that, can we?

Roger Graves says:

MPs, other than those with ministerial appointments, are paid to represent their constituents - period. I see no reason whatsoever for them to be sending out anything to anyone outside their own ridings. If they have anything to say nationally they can do so within the House or they can call a press conference. Sending mailings outside their own ridings is a waste of taxpayers money.

Good start! In my Quebec riding all I ever got was anti-Harper propaganda from the Bloc. It drove me nuts, knowing that this trash was paid for by Canadian taxpayers.
