Prorogue Ontario Style

Did anyone else see the irony in Premier McGuinty announcing yesterday that he was proroguing Parliament until sometime after the Olympics? You can read the article here.

Proroguing is something that all Parliaments do from time to time and it has been done over 100 times at the Federal level. What was interesting this time is that when Prime Minister Harper did it, the outrage from our national media and pseudo-intellectual university academics was over the top.  “The sky is falling, the sky is falling” Yeah right!

Can you hear the crickets now when Premier McGuinty does it? I sure can. The media has once and for all shown their disdain for everything conservative by remaining so silent when the Liberals employ the same parliamentary tactics. If people do not like Prime Minister Harper and do not want to vote for him- that is more than fine- that is what democracy is about.

It is almost pathetic, however, that the mainstream media seems not to care about this issue. Premier McGuinty has not had any plans for the province for a long time- no idea how to get out of deficit etc., etc. Now he has the gall to use $1.6 million of taxpayer’s dollars on an ad campaign to sell Ontarians on the benefits of the HST. You can read that article here. Truly mindboggling!  Hey Dalton- you rammed the tax down people’s throats- don’t bother wasting more of their money and insulting them even further.

Premier McGuinty needs to stop talking to kindergarten classes and get out and talk to real people. The province is falling apart at the seams and he is moving forward with nanny state programs like all day kindergarten- at a price tag of over $1 billion dollars a year- something Ontario cannot afford. Now why isn’t that debate front page news for the media elite? Just asking.  As far as proroguing- who really cares. In fact, just like at the federal level this can be valuable time for MPP’s to spent in their constituencies. The talking heads point to polls saying that 45% of Canadians oppose proroguing- that still means that 55% of Canadians couldn’t care less about it.

It seems like business as usual to me. The fleecing of wealth from the North American population. After decades of shipping jobs offshore I’ll bet you didn’t think anyone noticed. Liberals, Conservatives all serve the same masters. Wake up Canada. M.

William Burd says:

I agree with your comments. I find the efforts of Stephen Harper and his MP’s to establishing a fine effort in running the country in a difficult time of history.

As an established conservative I find most of what both the Provincial and Federal Liberals do and say rather sickening.

Ted Brewer says:

It is no news that the Canadian newspaper editors and TV commentators are pro-Liberal. The Conservative government and, in particular, the Prime Minister, can do nothing right in their view, but everything Ignatz spouts is straight from their Liberal bible. At least, in the US, CNN has a bit more balanced views although Fox news is largely rabid, with ultra right wing nuts like Beck and the fat man spouting their hatred and nonsense.

I do not blame Harper for proroguing and working on things important for Canada. Not having to listen to Layton and Iggy crying about Canadian Troops turning over the very people who have been killing our young soldiers to the Afgan army.Afganistan is a soveriegn country we are helping, they must deal with the prisoners. Can you imagine the idiots saying Harper must demand the U.S. send Kardar back to Canada for trial when the crime was committed aginst the U.S.Some Canadian he is when he was trained to kill our troops and was doing it when captured.Layton and Iggy are probably pleased he is filing a charge against Canada with a lawsuit for compensation of $10,000.00 I do not want anymore of our tax dollars wasted on such garbage.

The people of Toronto dislike McGoofy so much they elected two more Liberals in recent byelections. How’s that for a protest vote.
It appears Hudak and Horvath are not connecting with the hoi polloi.

I am tired of listening to the media and their pro-liberal opinion on every thing. Do they ever take into account that some of us are quite happy with our current Conservative Government, and the way they have handled the economic downturn in our economy. It would be so encouraging if the median would just be fair and let the Olympic Games begin and unite all Canadians for a common cause. BE PROUD…ENJOY THE GAMES.

McGuinty is only interested to extort money by way of HST and through daycare under the cloak of doing us a favour. But his scheme is cover up his party’s waste and ineptness.

Mr Harper did the right thing to progrogue, when I listen to question period all the opposition do is try to stumble the government. They know Mr. Harper has his work thought out carefully and are afraid he will one day get a majority. Mr. Ignatief is no match in fact I wonder how he ever got to be the leader of the Liberals. I cannot understand the media, they are not fair they must be bought out by the Liberals.

I’m a senior, and have voted in every Federal, Provincial and Municipal election since I was eligible to vote. I have observed two things about politicians at all levels;
1. Once elected they think they know everything–especially more than the great unwashed
2. They think they have to do something–and that is the more dangerous thing!

Lloyd says:

Should government have been prorogued? Absolutely not. Although it will not have a huge effect on the Country it is a slam in the face democracy. The fact that Chretien prorogued Parliament in 2003 to postpone questions on the sponsorship scandal reinforces my opinion that prorogation is undemocratic and the reason I was on the Hill to protest Harper’s irresponsibility. I am just sorry that it was not emphasized when Chretien misused this tool in the same way that Harper did.
If question period is the problem, then fix question period. If there is too much power in the PMO, then fix the PMO and return power to those elected. Do not admire political manoeuvring that allows dictatorial practices remove our liberties.
Globe & Mail (my favourite newspaper) ” nothing in these arguments justifies Mr. Harper’s most recent decision to prorogue Parliament” Norman Spector Saturday, January 9th. This is not a partisan issue but the good news is that Canadians are paying more attention to parliamentary process as a result.
