Another Election?

The Liberal Party is threatening a third election in less than four years if Stephen Harper and the Conservatives do not ease restrictions on the number of hours people have to work to qualify for Employment Insurance. Is this just a threat or are the liberals ready to take the plunge (again)?

The Conservatives currently have 143 seats, and the Liberals have 77, which is a 66 seat differential. That means the Liberals would have to win 33 ridings in the next election to return to power.

The Liberal brand is currently toxic in the West as they currently hold only 7 ridings west of Ontario. Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia will be where the Liberals will have to pick up many seats to have the chance of a minority government.  Michael Ignatieff is still in the honeymoon period with the media.

What should be disturbing to the Liberals is why are they not pulling substantially ahead of the Conservatives? Usually in challenging economic times the governing party takes a beating in the polls.  What are your thoughts on another election this year? To us, it would seem to be a big mistake for any party to be talking about an election anytime soon.

Michael Kelly says:

Hello,

No, I do not wish to see an election anytime soon. This whole world economic problem is not the fault of our government and anyone else in power would be facing the same challenging situations.

Chris says:

Liberals are again demonstrating their political philosophy:

“Get Power. Keep Power.”

There is nothing else there. Unfortunately only a minority of Canadians engage in the political discussion in any meaningful way. The Conservatives are far from finished and have in many ways breathed a lot of freshness into the discourse. From my vantage point, I cannot possibly see any alternative at the moment. But I have learned that Canadians do not think about political matters and, particularly in Ontario, keep on responding to Liberal deception.

The Natural Governing Party in naturally restive after being out of power for so long. They will try anything to get back into power, even elect someone as leader that did not see fit to live in Canada for some thirty years.
That is all Canada needs another Profeseur a la Trudeau.
God help us if he gets elected as PM

Albert Kuyerhuis says:

Spoiled kids often cannot take a No for an answer. They keep coming back to whine for that cookie. The Liberals could also suffer from a slightly different problem, a Withdrawal syndrome. That is known to bother former drug users from time to time for years. Perhaps they are affected by both.
In my opinion, PM Harper is doing a fairly good job. Considering the seat count and Liberal entrenchment in Ottawa which could take years to fade away, he is doing better than could be expected. Let us be realists and discerning supporters. Election talk may help the focus attention on the Liberals but I rather focus on Canada, a much prettier sight.

John MacLean says:

I would expect that a poll would find that the majority do not want an election. In the middle of an economic crisis, what we need is continuity.
Hopefully the electorate would punish the Liberals if they forced an unnecessary election on us. I expect however, the result would be another minority government, be it either Conservative or Liberal, and the “new” government would still be beholden to the seperatists and/or the socialists for survival, with the inevitable compromises.

Ted Brewer says:

I certainly do not want to see millions of dollars wasted on an unnecessary election at this time, and in this economy. I doubt that “Professor” Ignatieff has as good a grip on the economy as Stephen Harper, a trained economist. I simply do not believe Ignatieff is the man to run our government in these difficult times. The job needs a cool head, not a big mouth.

The very last thing Canada needs right now is another election. In the event we are forced into an early election I am sure voters will see it for what it is. The usual self serving Liberal political games in their desperate quest to get back into the public trough. Our government is doing a supberb job of getting our country through this down turn.

B. Quinn says:

Considering the Liberals authored the mess Canada is in (Creation of the “just society” - sure, right. Try asking Robert Drzansky! The Young Offenders Act, the Charter of “Rights & Freedoms”, legalizing abortion, radically changing immigration policies, legalizing sexual deviance, creating Canada’s massive national debt, 770 Billion spent so far on ‘official bilignualism’, official multiculturalism, including the culture that sanctions FGM and other abuses of women, Adscam and other corruption, the NEP, and, very nearly, NEP-2, and non-stop pandering to Quebec) I’m shocked that even one single Canadian would vote for this gang. But the fact that many will sure explains how Germany slid into its mess during the 1930’s and early 40’s. Simply put, an indoctrinated electorate ignorant of even the most basic of facts is a very dangerous thing. But the worst thing is that all of these Liberal attempts to socially engineer society have had a fatal side effect. Canada’s residual birth rate is 1.5 - well below the 2.1 needed to sustain the population. But the rates for immigrants from radically different cultures runs at 5.6. So it is just a matter of time before Canada is taken over and becomes an unrecognizable ghetto of conflicting cultures.

Last election, the liberals complained about an unwanted election so what makes them think timing is good for Canadians to support one? Good be the Lib support is slightly higher than the Cons-poor misguided voters. They just dont get it.

Funny too, that while Cons are in power, the lib types think of Harper as a Western dude that should NOT be elected and is trying to be like the US. But look at Iggy with all they years living in the States and that to them is acceptable. Lib types always seem to raise their hypocritical flag dont they?

I think another election this year would be the kiss of death for the Liberals - the present guys are doing OK and people are too pre-occupied with the economy and making a living. I’m pretty sure that even with the injection of $4 bil, Chrysler will fail because the sharks who caused this and the government’s reaction has us all too afraid to buy big stuff. Although this will be startling to our parliamentarians, for most of us they rate way down there at about the level of getting a haircut. Far below love, life, kids, bills, sports, fishing, skiing, etc. etc. I am not voting for anyone during 2009, thats a promise.

They have not accepted that it was their own corrupt policies that brought them down. They have never apologized and have ignored their past blunders with our money.Nothing has changed. They are encouraged by the bad press and the CBC that continually slag a good and honest man…Stephen Harper.

Warren says:

Typical Liberal conceit to threaten to cause an election when they don’t actually have the juice to make it happen without the help of their coalition buddies who the professor has already deeply offended .

Their new leader, who only won 97% of the vote in an unopposed coronation (how does that work?) and is far behind his party in public support, will rank as the “King of Smarm” by the time an election rolls around. Having been both for and against virtually all of the important issues worldwide over the past decade or so, his sanctimonious posture is gradually causing him to be seen as the empty suit that he is on real issues. The rhetoric of the classroom, that works on impressionable and idealistic youth, doesn’t cut it on Bay St. or Main St.

The idiotic citizens of Toronto think Miller and McGuinty are solid gold and doing a good job. Given the chance they would vote for the Democrats and Obama. This means that they are uneducated and illiterate children who should not be trusted with a vote. Unfortunately the genie is out of the bottle and socialism is now rampant in Canada. Think how much of a world leader Canada would have been with a series of Mike Harris’s running the county. The US would be eating our dust. Instead we had Trudeau, Cretin and Martin to wreck the joint. Iggy - a self-regarding university professor and inane scribbler, is now the next hypocritical lefty to run the Liberals. Have you ever tried to read his stuff? With Rae as his side-kick, they are going to form the next government as Canadians know no better. They mistake fake and shallow intellectualism as being a good formula for governing the country. We still haven’t recovered from Trudeau and they will forget all that and do it again. The election will happen within the next year and Canada will be in darkness for another generation.

However, the economic realities of the moment are probably pretty tough on those who were working, then abruptly and unexpectedly laid off. The Grits would have a tough job at the polls right now… but having said that the best asset that the PC’s had in the last election was the Lib’s leader who was close to unelectable. So with everything going for the team they still could not get a majority. There is a message here if Ignatieff somehow becomes appealing.

I like Harper and his approach to running the country but observe that he has a difficult time selling himself personally to the public and to the press. He is holding the cards and has done a credible job in light of the circumstances but it is not a time for the PC’s to get over confident.

I have a few liberal friends. They’re the dumbest people I know. If ignorance was a virtue, they’d be saints. No amount of dispassionate, reasoned debate will persuade them to abandon their beloved National Governing Party. The Liberals under Ignatieff will win either the next election or the one following because too many Canadians
1. believe in nothing, so they’ll believe anything, even Liberal lies
2. are comfortable with the entitlements offered by the welfare state, even if it means debasing themselves to the status of serfs
3. can’t see past the liberal bias of the national media
4. want Iggy to be our Obama
5. are so weak-willed that they are prepared to surrender their very souls to the omnipotent state.
If you’re an unscruplous cad, it’s easy to get elected: Lie through your teeth, promise the moon and make the voters believe that someone else is paying for it. That’s why your average Canadian, who spends more time on hockey scores than educating himself about politics and current events, would be doing the country a favour by choosing not to vote. I say put off the election as long as possible. Meantime, maybe enough Canadians will discover the truth about Iggy and decide Canada doesn’t need another corrupt Trudeaupian elitist as their next prime minister.

The last election was a near criminal waste of money and totally not needed. Just in September, the members of Parliament were congratulating each other for the increased spirit of cooperation. Then in October we suddenly have a poisoned parliament. What happened in between? Polls showing a rise in popularity? I agree with Patti Hutchison, that, at present, our economy and our environment needs the stability of a stable government, and that all Parliamentarians should come together and stop playing partisan games.

Many of the comments above are much too partisan to respond to.

Terry says:

Maybe the truth will set us free! The truth of the matter is that politcs and religion are two sides of the same coin. The Conservatives have a majority of a Protestant following and the Liberals have a majority of a Catholic following. On the political side of the coin the Conservatives are more for individualism and capitalism. The Liberals are more for public assistance and somewhat socialism. Equal opportunity for the rich and the poor. The bottom line for this is the debate over contraceptives. This would be related to family size and the ability to educate your children free from taxpayer assistance. My personal veiw point would be to go to the basics of all religion and use the GOLDEN RULE philosophy. We need to mature as Canadians and not Europeans living in North America. We live next door to the United States. Our direction should be in harmony with their direction. Never fight with a system! However you have the right to out do a system. Canada needs to turn ten degrees starboard. This implies that we need to abandon unnecessary regulations. We need to stop depending on unions for our standard of living and turn to right wing philosophy. We can do this and still keep the evolutionist philosophy of Charles Darwin out of the equation. The Conservatives are probably the only party willing to take that direction.

No election. However, by constant reference to the challenge, the Liberals project their hostility as negative criticism of the government. This adversely rubs off on people who do not pick up the details but do pick up the emotional content. The Conservative should expose politely and positively and not in anger with a counter message of their own. Not to respond is to give the field to the Liberals. Respond negatively with anger, and the Liberals again gain because who wants to be associated with the anger emotion.

No need to worry. This is just Ignatieff flexing his muscles. The Liberals are in no economic position to run a campaign and another election would drive them into ruin. Another election now would just further erode any credibility the Liberals think they may have left. We have a government who is participating with the G20 Group and responding to agreements made with these major players in the world. This is a joint and unified agreement to take steps to reverse the current Global Economic situation. For the Liberals to step forward now and think that they have any kind of an idea of doing anything different would be a huge mistake on their part. I do not believe Canadians are interested in any more distractions. It’s time to knuckle down and get to work. Every MP from every party. They have already been hired, so my advice to them is to get to work.

The comments being given so far are very interesting. Lest we forget all of the parties receive $1.95 for every Canadian who votes. I only learned about this when it was brought forward by Stephen Harper. Perhaps this was brought out in the media when Jean Chretian made it law, but I don’t remember hearing about this. This obviously means that the Bloc party, the party that wants to break up Canada are receiving tax payer money to further their agenda. I have wondered now that this has been revealed how many more Canadians will not vote in the next election. Also in regards to voter turn out, one would think that our MPs would be trying to find out why voter turn out is declining with each election. On the other hand could it be that most, if not all of them know why but don’t really care. It really doesn’t take a Solomon to reason out why so many Canadian are not voting.

Iggy, doesn’t deserve to be our next Prime Minister. I don’t really care that much for Harper but at least, to my knowledge, he had not abandoned Canada for 30 some years.

Not only is the cost of an election damaging in a recession, the wild promises made by the proponents in the election are wasteful at best and will prolong the economic down turn that Canada is experiencing.

Dalton Catchpaugh says:

As I see it there are three critical dysfunctions in Canada that need urgent remedies; 1) the disproportionately restrictive policies of Human Resources Canada as the root cause for the inaccessibility to unemployment insurance benefits, 2) lack of property rights and the excessive expropriation of personal incomes, and 3) the exaggerated pandering of Quebec nationalists for political gains. Although going to the polls again are as popular as a root canal, an election call based on these platforms, if only to stimulate the Conservative government into concrete corrective actions, would be beneficial for all Canadians.

1 – Inaccessibility to unemployment benefits
I was dismissed from my much needed employment because I dare reclaim my birthright (enshrined in our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms I am to believe) of conscious awareness, assert my free will and assume responsibility to question the assumptions of the operant societal worldview, that requires me to alienate fundamental moral ethics and servilely submit to a condition of consideration and judgment (including the loss of time, wages and incurred travel expenses) by a state sanctioned Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) – an organization mandated by ideological partisan politicians who coercively abused their power and authority of office, instruments of law and agency, to breed ethnocentrism with all the linguistic discriminatory practices against minority Anglophones and all the suffering, resentment, conflict and possible violence that such discrimination engenders. To add insult to injury our federal Human Resources and Skills Development (the “Commission”) disqualified my application from receiving unemployment benefits, stating that my actions were an act of neglect and misconduct. The Commission has clearly indicated its desire to disengage itself from its obligation, as a federal government agency, to protect chartered rights and freedoms of every Canadian citizen. According to policies of the Commission defending chartered rights and freedoms, as every Canadian should do, is an act unworthy of unemployment benefits.

2 – Exaggerated personal income tax
Personal income taxes are the largest single source of government revenue. In “Tax Facts 15”, The Fraser Institute states with family expenditures on the essentials of life (shelter, food, and clothing) at 34.9%, 45.4% of cash income goes to pay taxes. Taxation has not only become the most significant item that consumers face in their budgets, it is also growing more rapidly than any other single item. During the period from 1961 to 2007, the tax bill of the average family grew by 1,704%. This legal plunder and looting is made possible only because of our dysfunctional Canadian Constitution (PET’s poison pill) that gives our federal and provincial governments unlimited “carte blanche” powers of taxation. The Charter that is supposed to protect us is the reason why Canadian federal and provincial governments are able to institute procedures that violate the individual’s right to himself and his property. Their revenue collection agencies that create impossible situations for people, impose further debt, obstruct progress and intimidate law-abiding citizens with bank account seizures are extraordinary examples of the end justifying the means. As we continue to witness billions of dollars spent to bailout and award inefficiency, our growing national debt increases. And in our fiat money system, this is simply only a hideous scheme to continue and increase the confiscation of people’s wealth.

3 – Pandering Quebec
The proposals and declarations from our politicians in Ottawa and Quebec re-enforce the message that it is acceptable to marginalize the “other”, that there are two classes of citizens and that there will be no level playing field. From the time these teachings leave the mouths of politicians to the time they filter down and are disseminated in the media and enter the minds of all – from judges to juveniles – the damage is done. Politicians have become too cowardly and too ready to pander to the most retrograde elements in Quebec society; because the same old fear mongering that has been going on for years grabs votes. It grabs votes in the most narrowest way possible, by appealing to the lowest common denominator of Quebec society. Consequently it is too easy to demonize and marginalize minorities – “les autres” – in Quebec. Strong leadership is needed with the courage to proclaim nonsubmission to hereditary prejudices, the application of honesty and intelligence to oppose mediocrities.

We need to pay rapt attention to the deepening marginalization, confiscation and discrimination around us; commiserate for the victims of hypocritical deceit and for those who feel a strong sense of loyalty to malevolent, morally reprehensible political and corporate elite; strengthen immunity to political bribery, propaganda and the methods employed by governments to shape thought. As Canadians we tend to forget how each and every one of us has a birthright of conscious awareness and freewill, and we must choose to use our collective powers of free will to change the trends and course of history or suffer the results of perpetuated abrogated rights for political gains. At the next election we need to seriously question which political party will sincerely protect citizens’ freedoms and rights. In all honesty the Liberals are least apt and the Conservatives, while they have made headway on some issues, come short to maintain ethical health, support long-term prosperity, preserve and promote values. New blood is needed in the Ottawa corridors of power, and the Libertarian Party of Canada looks quite appealing these days.

The Conservatives are doing a good job even considering our economy today. Neither of the oppositions would or could do any better. I don’t like the Liberal arrogance, and NDP are pathetic.

Thus far the minority Conservative Government has served us well, I see no point in calling another election before next spring.

Dave S says:

If there is any way to beat a political party it is to give them enough rope and let them hang themselves. Liberals, go ahead, have or call for another election and just watch the country as a whole turn you down flat! There is a right time to call for an election and a wrong time and NOW is not the time to call for an election.

Gale says:

It would devestate our economy even further at this point. We have not even started recovery, more and more companies are in peril and some towns have now lost their only company which provided employment to its inhabitants. Personally, I think Iggy is an idiot, but, at the same time, the Conservatives are not helping themselves with the currect attack ads they are launching. While true, the conservatives must rise above these frivilous acts and prove they can actually run the country.

Valentine M. Smith says:

I cannot believe the people here posting in support of Harper: who has been doing a pathetic job (to any impartial observer).

Massive increases in spending, dangerous attempts at social engineering like thier lock them up forever for a single pot plant C-15 bill etc. etc..

The Conservatives need to be sent back to clean up the mess they made in Alberta’s finance, let a party with some fiscal prudence clean up the mess Federally. The glory days of the oil shiekdom days are gone for Alberta - don’t be so sure the people there will not see the connection and the Conservatives could be history across the praries too. Also now that the federal surplus that was carefully built up by the Liberals, and squandered by the Conservatives (even before the current crisis), is gone they could be facing third party status.
The only reason they should wait is to let the Conservatives totally implode in their incompetance.
