Congratulations to Free Enterprise and Porter Airlines

Free enterprise strikes again! I was thrilled to see Porter Airlines is  being revitalized with more staff, more jobs and more flights. Imagine that, a company with a proper business structure and a great market is expanding its services even during this economic recession. Read an article on Porter and Mayor Miller’s history here.

A ceremony was held today with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Transport Minister John Baird, Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant, Toronto Port Authority Chairman Mark McQueen, and Porter founder and CEO Robert Deluce all in attendance. Mayor Miller was noticeably (but not surprisingly) absent.

If only there was a bridge over to the Island to cut out the worlds shortest ferry ride (according to Toronto Port Authority and Guinness Book of records).

Flying with Porter is not only reasonably priced, the service is unbelievable, and the staff actually cares. Porter attendants actually want to talk and interact with you while other airlines seem to be promoting automated check in services as much as possible.

Municipal, provincial and federal government should now, more than ever, encourage free enterprise to revitalize the Canadian economy!

Much of the flying I do is with another airline that cares, Westjet. Remember how corporate elitist Air Canada tried to undercut them with our money.

I love it that someone has stood up to Mayor Miller. Good for Robert DeLuce. The sooner Mayor Miller is out of office the better for Ontario and Toronto.

Another failure by the useless Miller - thank goodness! Rightly or wrongly, the man has achieved nothing he undertook to achieve. Hasn’t anyone noticed that he is a loser of historic proportions? Why isn’t the press all over him like a tent for being 100% error-prone? The sooner he and his minions are dumped the better for the city. It is going to take years to recover from them and their disastrous and destructive policies.

I have flown with Porter Airlines and also was very impressed with the quality of service and value for the money. That’s how businesses prosper — give customers what customers want at a good price. I join you in congratulating Porter. They are a testament to how free enterprise really works. No begging for grants, subsidies or handouts. Just a great product. Air Canada, Bombardier, Chrysler and GM should learn a lesson from them.

I have not yet had the pleasure of flying with Porter, but I will certainly consider them if I am flying to a destination they serve.

I have had the pleasure of flying with WestJet, who stunned me back in 2001 when I first flew with them. They spoke to you, not at you. They smiled (without breaking their faces). They were pleasant and efficient. They never gave you the “You’re welcome for flying with us” attitude.

A couple of winters ago, I was returning to Toronto from a conference in Calgary. The inbound from Toronto Air Canada and WestJet planes that were the return flights for most of us from Toronto came in late because of weather issues back in Toronto. Nobody was begrudging that. The departure lounge was split between Air Canada and WestJet passengers.

Air Canada made the first announcement, explaining the incoming delay and that departure would be delayed by about an hour and a half to two hours. Cue the groans and grumbling.

WestJet then made their announcement. It started off the same, only they had an extra team on board the plane. Between them and the inbound flight crew, they were working hard to get the plane cleaned up quickly so that we could get on board, the plane was being serviced as they spoke, and the captain hoped that we would be on our way in about 45 minutes. Cue some applause for WestJet and chuckling at Air Canada and their passengers.

The WestJet flight did leave in 45 minutes. I arrived home 90 minutes before my Air Canada-flying office mates did.

I do my best to support good businesses in any economy. We all should.

My only problem now is wanting to support a good business - and having years-accumulated Aeroplan miles to use up.

It is proven again by this success of Poter Airlines that free enterprise is the way a economy could prosper and grow.

Barry Jackson says:

The Left don’t want the Porter model to succeed, otherwise their real agenda would be revealed for what it is: elitist social engineering. That’s why Mayor Miller sat at home pouting. Leftists can’t stand it when capitalism shows why it is infinitely superior to socialism. Miller belongs to the 18th century. If only Porter could fly him there.

Cam Walker says:

Mayor Miller is not the only problem. Many of Toronto’s leftist wacko, anti capitalist citizens supported him in his foolish endeavour to prevent Porter from flying in the Toronto area. Most cities of international importance would give their collective right arm to have air service in the very heart of their downtown business areas, but not the backward ancient philistines of Toronto.

DouglasM says:

“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” – Winston Churchill

David Miller et al could do with a lesson or two on this.

Chris says:

I remember when Miller published doctored pictures of jet-transport category aircraft like the B747 and A320 flying around Toronto City Centre airport during his election campaign to deceive and mislead the Toronto electorate (which, by the way, is not hard to do). I also remember his cynical cancellation of the airpor bridge right after he took office.

I will go OUT OF MY WAY to fly on Porter Airlines.
