Mike Duffy takes on Equalization

It was great to see Senator Mike Duffy take on Premier Robert Ghiz from PEI over his complaint on equalization payments. Senator Duffy indicated that it was not smart for the Premier to align himself with Premier Danny Williams from Newfoundland. You can read the article here.

As usual the media tried to pounce on Duffy for what he had said - and it was great to see Duffy blow them off. Premier Williams is a nonstop whiner about being hard done by and nothing that the federal government does is good enough for him. News flash Danny- if you think the Conservatives are going to listen to you, guess again. The Conservatives have no seats in your province, so you have no ear in Ottawa.

The two major contributors to equalization are Ontario and Alberta and I am sure that many residents of those provinces are sick and tired of Premier Charest, Williams and now Premier Ghiz from PEI whining about not getting enough money from other provinces. Enough is enough.

It will be great to watch Senator Duffy speak his mind and tell it like it is. With decades of journalistic experience behind him, Duffy has proven to be more than fair to all sides of the political spectrum, unlike the main stream media. He will be a welcome breath of fresh air to Ottawa.

Well said! Having the Duff in the Senate is going to send a breath of fresh air through that so-called house of Sober Second Thought. It will be nice to see the Liberals wake up more often than just to quash another vote for an elected senate. Go get ‘em, Duff!

Bernard Coady says:

Good for Mike Duffy.
Finally someone is willing to stand up to these Premiers who won’t do enough for their own provinces but keep them perennial welfare cases.

Are you sure Ontario still pays into Equalization Payments? I remember an article in November stating that 2009 would be the first year they don’t.

swatson says:

The 50% formula would include 50% of Newfoundland’s provincial revenue from natural resources and give Newfoundland $2.7-billion in equalization payments. The federal plan to eliminate the additional Accord transfers to Newfoundland would give Newfoundland $1 billion.
The current formula would give them $1.2 billion. Thus Williams believes his province should be receiving $1.5 billion more than it is currently receiving.
Why wouldn’t revenue be included in equalization? What if Alberta were to take out it’s oil revenue from equalization equation? If equalization is truly about providing the same level of social services, all provincial revenues should be taken into consideration.

I AGREE WITH SENATOR DUFFY, CANADIANS ARE SICK AND TIRED OF THE WHINNING AND COMPLAINING THAT IS GOING ON IN OTTAWA. IT IS TIME ALL POLITIANS DISPLAY A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS IMPROVING THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF ALL CANADIANS.

Jim Henkel says:

As you state, Mike has been consistently fair and objective in expressing his views on the political scene, unlike those of most other MSM organizations, particularly the CBC. I expect he will make an outstanding contribution to the Senate and fully expect that he will be elected to that body when Stephen Harper is successfull in achieving that goal. Williams should be given a very large slice of cheese to go with his incessant whine. Charest is a tragic disappointment since his transition to Quebec politics. Given the revelation of his true views, thankfully he no longer heads the CPC federally. I am ashamed to say I supported him at the time. You may also want to add McGuinty to the list of constant whiners.

Way to go Duff, tell it like it is. Poor Danny Chavez and Newfoundland have been living on welfare all their lives and now they won a multi-billion lottery they still want to collect the welfare cheques.

H. Stark says:

We have politicians in Canada and no statesmen. And, thanks to providence we are a resource rich country, the combination of which, has created a nation of whiners and entitlement. Williams is a classic example he wants it both ways and the premier of PEI jumping in bed with him gives credence to my long held view, particularly in this time of cost cutting by the electorate. They should be advocating that the 4 Maritime provinces be one province.

Dot Fuhrman says:

It looks like Alberta and B.C. will be the only provinces sending more money to Ottawa than they receive . Now is the time for the three western provinces to separate and go it alone. We can do it. All we need is a leader, a fellow like Senator Duffy.

Let’s heat it for Duff! At last, a strong, REASONABLE AND LOGICAL VOICE in the Senate. Hopefully, his opinions and factual positions will now be heard LOUDLY. And Mike, another subject you might tackle, again involving Danny Williams, is the irresponsible, internationally damaging action he caused the Province of Newfound/Labrador and CANADA in the nationalization of the assets of AbitibiBowater without negitiation or compensation and the denial of legal rights. Can he do that? Williams is completely OUT OF CONTROL. NO letters to the Editors of papers throughout the country would have as much impact as for Senator Duffy to tell the people of Canada the REAL STORY and its impact. I Hope you see this.

The last time I cheered for Danny Williams was when he was constantly interrupted by that b… Heather Mills, (at the time married to SIR Paul Mccartney) If ever a saw a woman with no class at all, she was it.

Since that Williams has been a pain in the butt, a typical welfare case that wants more. So what else is new eh?

HURRAY FOR DUFF, we need more like him.

ScurvyDog says:

One comment regarding this line in the NCC…. “The Conservatives have no seats in your province, so you have no ear in Ottawa.”

That’s very true but I think government should listen and act IF and issue or concern is reasonable.

An example of this is in Halton where we elected PC Ted Chudleigh and we need an expansion of the Milton Hospital. Well the Ontario Liberals will not provide the funds even thought our municipality as doubled its population which is a directive from Ontario’ Places to Grow” initiative.

Does this mean we Should have elected a Liberal to get what we deserve?

Anyway off topic and keep up the Great work Duff!

It is time for all of the Provincial and Territorial Governments to work with the Harper Government to jump start our economy ….and not with more spending !
Duffy is right in telling Mr Ghiz to pay attention to all of Canada …and forget about joining Danny ‘the Whiner ‘ Williams.
Go! Duff Go !

How did NFLD get their equalization payments to not include the off shore mineral rights in the first place?
By lying and cheating the taxpayers of Canada with the help of some corrupt MP’s or ministers?
Now Danny Williams thinks he’s going to ‘help out Ontario’ with Newfy dollars? I don’t think so Danny Boy.
Equalization plan should be scrapped completely because of the abuse of this social welfare program. Then Dalton McGuinty, Williams, etc. etc etc. won’t have to go begging every other week day to the federal government for more of their loony spending doh.
I know, I watch too much TV.
Duffy is dim bulb in a dark hallway.

Victor Bauman says:

Seems like Quebec has long been the winer province, and they’ve gotten many perks that the rest of us don’t have. So why shouldn’t Williams, and now PEI copy that model? Like how many seats is Que guaranteed in parliment-regardless of their population? How long have they been on the receiving end even though they have a strong economy? If Que can get that by complaining and threathening, why shouldn’t Williams and Ghiz (and the rest of us as well) try it?
Duff’s got it right. Let’s not give in to any more of these tactics.

Madden says:

Quebec is the one that really bugs me. When things were tough times in Alberta Ralph cut, cut, cut, and we all paid a price, but it was the right thing to do. Quebec gets a lot of money given to it and I don’t recall them offering to send some back to us and maybe some of their own when we were in need. I don’t recall hereing about big cuts in social spending there. What they supported were policies that almost ruined Alberta. I will never forget the N.E.P. I will never forget the Albertans that lost everything they had worked for for decades. I will never forget the friends that lost their homes and cars. I will never forget the people that died because they were put on hold while needing operations when the money was not there to get them in to the hospital. Alberta alone managed it’s affairs in a way to stop deficit spending and wasting millions on interest payments to places like China.
If Duff is willing to hold those unrealistic premiers feet to the fire over the constant stealing of wealth, I say, good on him.

If Duff doesn’t fall prey like most politicians to his good work as Senator in the Senate, To his continuing good work I say AMEN. To so called equalization which has been unfair from the start, especially through Mr. Prime Minister Peter Trudeau, I say abolish it and Duff I hope you read this and thanks in advance for any assistance you may render to accomplish this valid suggestion. Thanks again. Stephen Gillespie, London, On.
