Finance Minister Bob Rae - A Scary Outlook for Canada

There is no doubt that the economy will be the prominent issue on voters minds come Election day.   But it is frightening to know that many Canadian will cast their vote based on political rhetoric rather than fact.

Our blog yesterday discussed the facts behind the current economic crisis facing Canada.  We also sent this press release to the national media, which champions the need for strong stewardship and responsible spending.

In order to make it through these times of economic uncertainty, Canada will need a government that will reduce taxes, invest in jobs and keep spending under control.

Canadians need to know that job creation is a key to economic stability, and in September a total of 107,000 new jobs were created in Canada.  This number is ten times what economists predicted and is an important fact the media should be sharing with Canadians.

It worries me that many will base their votes on the fear mongering that has been created by the political left and the media. If that happens there is a good chance that the Liberal’s could once again form government.  A Liberal government with Bob Rae as Finance Minister of Canada would be a very scary proposition.

Calling an unecessary election that costs 280 million only to return to a minority Tory government is not strong stewardship and responsible spending. Mr. Harper made an ill advised judgement call and decided to gamble with the electorate in the hopes he might snag a majority, he would have done the country and himself much better if he had continued to govern to the best of his abilities within the confines of the current parliament and stick to his fixed election date. This gamble should never have been taken much less contemplated and I am fearful that the Tories will be ill judged and in a weaker position as a consequence. The thought of a government lead by any of the opposition parties is dreadful at best,

Gordon says:

There can be no doubt that Rae is a “has been”. He has had his chance to represent the people of Ontario and he flubbed it. Remember the “Rae Day”, I am sure the nurses do. Now today, he is trying to re-emerge as the saviour for Liberals. I believe that Stephen Harper can and will do a much better job for all Canadians. Also consider that Ignatieff spent half of his adult life in the United States. Now he returns to tell Canadians how he would run this country. Guess what, he did not care about Canadians which is why he went to the United States. Finally we come to Dion, in his younger days it is said that he supported separatism. True or not he does not understand English Canadians as was pointed out in his CTV interview today and he is hoping to take over the PMO and then formulate a 30-50 day plan on how to run Canada. Stephen Harper has proven himself to be the brightest and smartest of them all. I want him to stay as Prime Minister

I suspect that the 107,000 number for new jobs in September was a fudged number generated by the Labour Dept and Stats Can … to prop up the Conservative position just before Tuesday’s Voting Day. Moreover, most of those jobs appear to be part time and temporary low-paying positions, along with a big increases in government jobs at the municipal, provincial and federal levels. We need solid growth in the manufacturing and materials sectors … starting right now. I have heard nothing to date from any of the political parties about their plans to promote immediate job creation other than to proceed with more studies.

Warren Adamson says:

Couldn’t agree more. If Bob Rae becomes Minister of Finance under P.M. Dion, there won’t be a “rae” of hope. Son of NEP will look like the Mother of NEP.

As you say, we’ll be singing “Who’s Scary Now?”. (Sorry!)

BTW, we’re hearing criricism that a lot of these reported new jobs are just “part-time”. I’m thinking that under a Dion/Rae yoke, ALL jobs will be part-time.

When are people going to realize you can’t depend on TV for the truth? The same people who are responsible for the economic disaster today are the same people who own the media. Hello? You have to do your own searching to find out what is really going on in the world and believe me, it ain’t pretty. However, Canada is in a better position than most (we are running a surplus) and we can thank Stephen Harper for that. Shame on Bob Rae for creating unfounded fear and panic. Wonder who owns him?

People have to understand that this is not a national issue, but a worldwide problem that Canada is facung .Since the USA is Canada’s largest trading partner,Canada is higly affected how well or how bad the US economy is doing and so is the rest of the world.
I think Mr. Harper is doing a fine job and all we hear from the Liberals and the NDP is nothing but cheap Rhetoric.
Think about the mess Bob Rae and his party left Ontario in . To have Dion and Rae govern the country is a scary thought.

L. G. says:

The complaint that the creation of jobs was ‘not good’ enough (low paying - boo hoo) is exactly the kind of problem we face with Canadians lack of historic knowledge. DON’T BLAME THE CONSERVATIVES FOR MFG JOB LOSES IN CANADA!!! That was Chretien and his entourage who went to China and signed ‘trade deals’ allowing Canadian business to move to China. Some Canadian firms resisted offshoring their labor but the ‘WALMART’ mentalility of the consumer and the lack of support for ‘MADE IN CANADA’ by the LIberal gov’t killed that quickly enough. To blame the Conservatives for not fixing the barn door after the entire herd got out, thanks to the Liberals, is typical Canadian reaction. So just stop it- for once.

E. Roth says:

Canadians have been conditioned to think - what can the Government do for me? and even those that favor cutbacks think ‘yes cut THEM back, just don’t cut ME back’. The colleges and universities are conditioning the students and have been for a long time and the Liberals did a fine job of making sure that the majority of Canadians either works directly or indirectly for the government. Bureaucrats run this country and they are worried about their jobs as are the CBC and Macleans and a lot of others on the dole.
Mr. Harper is a very intelligent man but you really have to wonder who his advisors are sometimes. I agree with Rae about the timing of the election. It is just more ammunition for the left to say ’see he doesn’t keep his promises’

Born on a farm at Carsonby, outside of Ottawa, provided the joy of nature and the unlimited imagination of the future. In the late 20s and early 30s, dark clouds brgan covering our fields and feelings as the great Depression
moved in.Struggling with working and helping others, WW11 took over our
lives to live for Canada. My role was a fighter pilot in the famous Spitfires. After the war
Canada became a country that soon had a role with other nations.
I have followed the performance of all PM,s since the 40,s to today, and have concluded that Steven Harper will be the best Prime Minister that Canada has ever had. To summerise this, he has the ability to cover all issues a nd do it for the best of Canada. Other cpmpetitors deal mostly for their oqwn special uissues and don,t ahve the ability to bring the whole together. For the happiness of a new and better Canada my faith and heart is with Stephen Harper.

I’m sorry friends, but while I agree on most all your points, Finance Minister Comrade Bob Rae is not the phrase that should frighten Canadians most. That phrase is Prime Minister Comrade Chairman Jack Layton.

John says:

280 million dollars for an election, that is just pocket change compared to the 888 billion dollars wasted paying intrest on the debt left by Trudeau when he was finally kicked out of office by the Conservatives in 1984. This information comes from the Canadian taxpayers website but you will have to do the math. Just think what Canadians could have done with 888 billion dollars that came out of the taxpayers pocket.

Stephen G. says:

Although my name is the same as the smartest Prime Minister trhat Canada has ever had and I’m no chicken with age, I am a successful business person in the Country we know as Canada. It is scary to think that other Canadians of whatever stripe would vote out the best thing this part of the world has ever seen. I’m not afraid to name it either, Our Conservative leader, Mr Stephen Harper. he will do very well in any event, which cannot be said about any other leader of the other parties who are attacking Canada’s Prime Minister. They for the most part are leeches living off the tax payers of this country Canada. So dear folks of Canada think very deeply before casting a vote to change the very best we’ve ever had. Thank you.

Jerry Pryde says:

Bob Rae as finance minister?
Does anyone remember his rule in Ontario as an NDP Premier?
Just look at their record, and ask yourself why the NDP hasn’t been elected federally, forming the government. Need I say more?

Public ignorance (unless they wake up) may put Stephen Harper out of his job. If so, they have only themselves to blame for whatever happens after that.

Rene Vicente says:

Yes, I don’t understand the voters mentality. They don’t want to know the facts and just listen to rhetoric and promises. Today, the famous Jean-Chretien (famous for his crook ways of maneuvering government funds) gave a speech about his past government and his candidate Dion. If voters would only take a minute to evaluate what all the parties offered, CONSERVATIVES would end up the only one with good and sound economic management. Its really scary to think “DION AS PRIME MINISTER AND BOB RAE AS FINANCE MINISTER.” Three more days before the election and the CONSERVATIVES should really work hard to change the scenario. I believe that there is already an agreement that if it is a CONSERVATIVE minority, the LIBERALS, NDP, GREEN & BLOC HEADS are going to form a government. GOD HELP US !

If You are going to use employment numbers, there should be a clearity how many jobs are full time and how many are part time. Also a break down by industry is an important factor.

The most serious issue for Canadians is the health care issue. But it seems to have been forgotten. The conservative government is prepared not to save it but to privatize it. It is a very frightening thought that Canadians will be subject to the type of medical care as Americans. If you don’t have the money too bad for the care!
…that’s truly a most eregious situation

Barry Jackson says:

You just know that the Liberals, who have always put party before country, are praying for a financial crisis to strike Canada. They know that their superior spin machine, combined with the complicit left-leaning media, can convince millions of economic illiterates that only the Liberals can confront the doom and gloom scenario that is their creation. What weasels! What crooks! Come on, Stephen, give ‘em hell!
