Countdown to an Election

Stephane Dion and Stephen Harper had a little sit down over the Labour day weekend to discuss what it would take to extend the life of this government.

Oh to have been a fly on the wall for that meeting!

It is hardly a surprise that the meeting between the two did not go well. Nor is it a surprise that the meeting was quite brief.

In all honesty did anyone really believe that Dion and Harper would be able to find a common ground? This minority government was dead before the meeting even began. Barring some unforeseen event we are headed to the polls this fall, with an election being called as early as this coming weekend.

The National Citizens Coalition intends to be very active during this federal campaign. We are going to work hard to make sure the issues that matter most to you are discussed and debated by all parties.

We are already hard at work creating billboards, radio spots, web videos and newspaper ads. We intend to get the facts on issues like Dion’s Carbon Tax plan, the economy and government spending.

But we need your help. We would like to know what you think are the most important issues, and what you think should be debated during this election. E-mail us at ncc@nationalcitizens.ca so we can ensure we are fighting for the issues that matter most to you.

I hope you have had an wonderful summer, and I look forward to hearing from you throughout this election campaign.

David Long says:

The most important item for discussion during the election is the terrifying erosion of free speech and our legal rights by our many “Human Rights” commissions. There are many sites to peruse this, but in particular see the extensive archives at Maclean’s magazine, Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn.

There is a huge movement to stop these Kangaroo Courts and the NCC belongs in the fight.

Dion’s Carbon Tax would be a detriment to all Canadian citizens. He is only trying to make a name for himself. Woe to any family with the name of Dion!

Surely the “Green Shift” is just the National Energy Programme in another, and less forthright, form. It represents a massive, sneaky, grab of provincial revenues to buy votes for the Liberals in the East, and which would do nothing to alter energy use habits of consumers. At least Trudeau and Lalonde were forthright and made no bones about what they were doing, not like Dion! Anyway, why do we need Equalization-Phase II? Already, there is a substantial shift of funds away from the West under the original plan, without a booster!

L. G. says:

I agree that Human Rights Commissions must be overhauled or just plain abolished with the over bearing attitudes they have developed over the years. They have become ‘think’ police and expect all of us to conform to their beliefs. That is troubling

Health Care in my opinion has been neglected as an issue and should be part of the election. WE have not got the right to chose what type of health care we wish to be provided for us personally. I believe in ‘alternative or often called non-drug or complementary’ heatlh care. That option is denighed me. Doctors are basically glorified and rightly qualified ‘drug’ pushers but drugs don’t cure. Many nondrug alternatives that have no side affects are made unaccessible on purpose by drug supporting health care authorities. Doctors who do incorporate ‘alternative’ therapy in their practices are often chastised by their colleges and risk being de-licenced. Is that freedom?

Also, Health Canada has lost its credibility. This through the pushing of Bill C51 and 52 by Health Minister Clement to add power to Health Canada. I liken Health Canada to the Human Rights Commissions. There is a lack of qualified and clear thinking people but the agendas seem to be kept very much alive.

We are not as free as we like to believe we are, Not in speech nor in health care. These two issues need to be an important part of the up coming election.

David Bawden says:

Do you not think that perhaps Mr. Harper should wait to be defeated in the House? We don’t know what he said to Mr. Dion that will precipitate an election. I’d like to know what the issues are that would potentially bring about a defeat of the government.

Kim Metke says:

My concern is Big Government. The attitude that if it is government run, it is better. With that we get the intrusions into civil liberties, tax & spend mentality, and the latest war on something (drugs, oil, third world countries, etc.), or the latest bleeding heart cause (environment). Conducted on very flimsy evidence. I have already survived the previous calamities (running out of food, running out of oxygen, being fried because of ozone depletion). Somehow I think we will survive the enviroment thing in spite of the governments best efforts. An honest lawyer (could be an oxymoron) suggested, “Name something the government runs well.”
The legal system does not dispense justice, the education system does not provide learning, most of our highways and streets are disasters.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Bruce Carson says:

1. I agree with David Long. The human rights commissions have to go.
2. Taxes need to come down. We need less government and less government funded programs. Why is the ROC subsidizing $5/day daycare in la belle province?
3. Leave Alberta alone!! The one province that is a bastion of free enterprise should be an example for the rest of Canada, not the whipping boy.
4. As I shivered through an unusually cold August in Victoria, I can’t believe the global warming folks have got it right, let alone be at all confident in their faith that man is the cause. Risk billions, perhaps wreck a vibrant economy on what is little more than a computer modeled theory? I think not!
If the Liberals want to run on this one, perhaps the NCC should have some fun publishing and promoting the many scientists who disagree with His Goreship and the UN’s selective viewpoint.

The liberal caucus meeting has had a recommendation to focus on Harper’s leadership. Really? One would think that focusing on Leadership for the upcoming election would only favor Harper - Unless you are a fan of a shifting Carbon Shift, the Clarity Act, or a red backpacks.
The issue of election timing shouldn’t be an issue: both Harper and Dion have flip-flopped on when to have an election in their own special ways.

Tony luck says:

Are you listening to yourselves? We are all screaming for a real conservative government. A government that will really change the way things are done in Canada. Harper has proven to me that he is no different that any of the other leaders or parties in this country.
Cutting the GST does not prove you are conservative. Have you seen the latest emploment stats? “Since July 2007, employment in the public sector has grown by 6.1%, compared with 0.5% for the private sector…”Now this isn’t all federal hiring BUT is a good part of it and the feds lead they way. Government is big and getting bigger. Typical Canadian leadership…
And you who are worried about the carbon tax, just be glad you are not living in BC. We have already been shafted by a political leader that doesn’t have a clue about the environment but wants to look good on the world stage.
Also the CBC is still getting huge subsidies to unfairly compete against private broadcasterd. The wheat board is still in place to rip off the Western farmer. Kangaroo human rights courts are still wielding ecessive powwer. The federal tax grab is still too large in respect to the provinces. We need a federal provincial transportaion funding policy. We need more freedom of choice when it comes to the CRTC and the interenet. And on and on…Canada is a political basket case. Always has been always will be until we can actually change the way it works…Oh yea, real senate reform…
I have pretty much decided not to vote this election to show my disgust to the unchanging nature of the Canadian political system and establishment…Wasn’t Sarah Palin speach last nite great. Wouldn’t you like a leader like that in Canada? I sure would like to have someone with some real values and fortitude…

Oh, I’m sorry. Did I not mention the Liberal, NDP looking handout of my hard earned tax dollars to the auto industry by a so called conservative prime minister? Vote buying just like all the others. Conservatism by any other name…
