Federal By-Elections

While watching the results of yesterday’s Federal by-elections, it struck me that our national media was having a love in with the Liberals and their victories in Toronto.  Meanwhile the bigger stories of the night – the collapse of the NDP vote, the Conservative win in Saskatchewan and the very tight race in the riding of Vancouver-Quadra – were all but ignored.

Bob Rae (yeah, the former NDP premier who all but financially destroyed Ontario) was his usual smug self while giving his victory speech.  One of his quotes, “Harper doesn’t get it on justice issues, on climate change and so on,” actually made me laugh.  Did Rae get anything when he was Premier of Ontario?

As a result of these by-elections, opposition leader Stephane Dion will have to constantly watch his back.  His potential successors for the leadership of the Liberal party are now in the House of Commons and will be scrutinizing his every move.  If the Liberal leader believes that the very predictable wins in Toronto and the narrow victory in BC are a mandate to call an election he may want to reconsider his thought process.

The decline of the NDP vote and the strong showing by the Green Party should be cause of great concern for Jack Layton.  It is hard to know if the Green vote was an example of people parking their votes, or if it was a true reflection of voter intent, either way Layton should be worried!

It will be interesting to see how these by-election results play out over the next few weeks.  The constant barrage about the Cadman affair and “Naftagate” has obviously had little to no effect on hard working Canadians, and do not seem to be cause for an election.  It looks more and more like there will not be a federal election this year.  The Liberals may try to force us to the polls as a result of these results, but in my opinion that would demonstrate a false sense of bravado with a weak leader who will face great difficulty during a prolonged election campaign.

National Media - are you kidding!
The Canadian media is so leftist, I don’t think they know there is anything to the right - last evening I learned from a new poll in the United States, that 92% of the print, radio and television media consider themselfs left wing - don’t we as Canadians merely follow our American Brothers?

The Fiberal wins in Toronto were widelay anticipated. I have known for a long time that Torontonians don’t know how to vote! Vancouver Quadra is nothing to crow about for the Libs.

I loved the results in Saskatchewan! First they kicked out the N.D.P. provincially, Brad Wall is a breath of Fresh air. And the Conservatives won the by-election, a good way to spit in Dion’s face for forcing a woman candidate on them, against their wishes. I love it!

Peter Wrenshall says:

Let’s see…an outright loss in one rural riding (Saskatchewan), significant erosion of their support in their supposed stronghold in Vancouver Quadra, and basically holding their own in Ontario. All in all, a net loss for the federal Liberals. Meanwhile Stephane Dion tries to spin it as a “great day for Liberals, ” hoping the central Canadian mainstream media amplifies it to the point of bare credibility with the public. Dion once again resorts to self-deception. Yes! Yes! Stephane, keep it up right into the next election! I would like nothing more than to see this hapless weather-vane of all things “progressive” stare into the abyss of a Conservative majority.

Sophie says:

What people fail to realize about Mr. Cadman is the effects of pain killers. Mr. Cadman was suffering from cancer and would have been on very strong painkillers. Drugs like morfine and demerol are know to cause hallucinations. Sometimes, patients can say things that are very disturbing to their relatives as a result.

When one thinks about it, it isn’t logical. An insurance company is not going to give anyone with a terminal illness a life insurance policy for a million dollars. Insurance companies insure people against the risk of illness and they don’t pay for pre-existing medical conditions. It is very likely that Mr. Cadman was preoccupied with the welfare of his family. Mr. Cadman’s wife may be telling the truth that he told her this.

Mr. Cadman was a very good man and unfortunately, people may label his widow as an opportunist out to line her own pocket. The whole thing seems very tragic because it may overshadow the memory of a good man who was very deeply loved by his wife and family. She has placed herself in a media circus at the time that she most needs compassion and support in her grief. The conflict will likely isolate her from her community and family at the time when she needs their help.

Just watched a CBC interview of Bob Rae. The Hostess emphasized the 2 big wins in Toronto and made no mention that these were 4 encumbant liberal seats to begin with. Big question for me is why are the Toronto ridings (in contrast to the broader GTA) so stubornly if not blindly voting Liberal? One factor has to be the huge sway & influence that the Toronto Star has had on Torontonian perceptions.

If there is any interest in encouraging high professional media standards in this country, then the farcical Liberal bias of the Toronto Star should be taken to task. How can a major paper justify a trust initiated prejudice (from original founder - Atchinson) to Liberal values? This has reduced the Star to a propoganda rag - as opposed to a balanced & professional media and this propoganda farce has been undermining the truth and democratic freedoms in the Toronto area for quite some time !!

Steve McCullough says:

People sure have short memories in Toronto Centre riding. Unless there are a lot of gays in the Toronto Centre riding, which may explain some of Mr. Rae’s votes, the people there seem to have forgotten that Mr. Rae was once an N.D.P. premier of Ontario that the public supposedly didn’t like. Just because he is now a Liberal ( I guess the voters think that now that he is a Liberal makes him better somehow) doesn’t make him better. As for Willowdale, I am not too surprised having lived there years ago. With exceptions, that riding tends to love Liberals. Don’t be too surprised at the media. There are not too many right wing types in the media or organizations.

Is this the National Citizens Coalition or the National Rightwing Citizens Coalition? I think it is time for honesty and forthrightness. You are a RIGHT WING operation and should label yourselves as such.

I think the media should focus on the collapse of the Conservatives in the most populous province in Canada, Ontario. In spite of a Right wing media, The Toronto Sun, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, plus CTV, and Global, the major radio stations CFRB, 680, and 640 . In spite of all this Right wing propaganda still Ontarians and particularly Torontonians will not vote Tory. Ask yourself why. It is brain dead to simply say we don’t know what we are doing. Think, really think about why Conservatism is losing its lustre. You can look south of the border if you like. You can look at Ontarios recent experience with Conservatism too. You can even look at Harper’s record. It is laughable on the
Environment, on national security(why did we need to agree to have American troops come across the border?) The fixation on law and order and building more and more prisons. America has gone from 11 billion to 49 billion spent on encarceration in the last 20 years, what has improved????
I could go on and on. But Conservatives as a rule don’t listen so I know I have wasted my time but then not as much as the average Conservative who can’t understand why most Canadians aren’t as paranoid and fearful as he is.
By the way, I noticed that the Conservatives had to find an old NDPer to win them their federal seat in Sask. It is quite humorous. I wonder if they paid her a million, just to cover her costs mind you. Ha!

Warren says:

The Liberal reaction to barely surviving the by-elections was typical self-serving Liberal hypocrisy. Going from 4 seats to 3, barely, is a win??? Only in the desperate mindset of Liberal spin-meisters and sycophants.

To the Liberal Party, politics and government are not about what’s best for Canadians and making the tough choices to maximize the cost/benefit of the federal spending of our confiscated earnings. It’s about themselves and being in power, an objective they will obsess over and covet , irrespective of how many chickens they have to promise to put in every pot. Their slavish followers don’t realize the condescension with which they are being treated by their own Liberal MP’s and candidates and the Liberal Party’s house organ, the Liberal Daily Bugle, aka, the Toronto Star/CBC alliance.

What is it that’s in Ontario’s drinking water that causes such fuzzy thinking and lemming-like reliance on the Liberal demigogues by so many of my fellow Ontarians, regarding both the federal and the provincial political scenes? Provincially, Dalton McGuinty is still blaming Mike Harris for all of the province’s ills that are within the purview of his government to amend. How many consecutive majorities will Dalton require to make the changes he’s continually carping about?

Perhaps Liberals are more to be pitied than chastised. When looking for debating points, they must resort to mind-reading and the creation of straw men in order to define some egregious Conservative initiative or position on an issue in order to have something about which to complain. The most recent example, and testimony to the depths of their desperation, was the need to risk libeling the PM on the Cadman issue in order to try to win an argument. This characteristic Liberal approach goes back to PM Mulroney whom they tagged “Lyin’ Brian”. Upon asking (via email) the 4 Liberal talking heads on a pre-Mulroney Ethics Committee Hearing edition of Steve Paikin’s show, The Agenda, which was a one hour diatribe on Brian Mulroney, to name one specific illegal act committed by him, the only answer came from Sheila Copps who said that maybe, just maybe, Mr. Mulroney had taken money from Schreiber illegally. (BTW, Paikin is the best moderator in North America.)

Finally, if previous responder Steve thinks the Globe & Mail is a right wing newspaper, he’s definitely wearing a Liberal hearing aid.

As for the conservative law and order agenda, it is an issue the conservatives recieve a lot of feedback that it is one of the most important issues to the people they represent. Conservatives listen to the important things and how they effect the average person,

Yes he proudly supports bill 101. In my books that makes you a bigot Mr Dion…So keep opening your mouth, because every time you do, support goes up for Harper. Dick Field says:

Bob Rae won because he had Graham’s backing, a patron of the homosexual groups that inhabit the riding. Plus, Rae is a half socialist and half a business oriented elitist. His principles are suspect, therefore he belongs in the Liberal camp. When he was Premier of Ontario, he blundered into the Employment Equity Act fiasco by listening to the distorted Stephen Lewis report on systemic racism; an overkill report on so called anti-black and visible minority biased employment. His “No white men need apply” advertisement in the Ontario Public Service newsletter, caused him to be tossed as far as he could be thrown. He stumbled into Rae Days and totally lost credibility with his Union friends. He really blew it by cutting back on General Practitioner MD entry into our medical schools (couldn’t afford to pay for any more MDs under our health plan, said he). Now GP MDs are an almost extinct species. He and his Party messed with the Atomic Power refurbishment and building program and caused our near shortage of power that is even now a touch and go situation. My personal opinion is that between Dion the “French” citizen and Rae the mixed up aging “Wonder Boy” the Liberals have covered themselves with another layer of losership, not leadership. Good on them!

Warren, the Globe has been a BUSINESS paper for as long as I can remember. Business is not socialist. So unless you are saying the Globe and therefore business is socialist then I think you must agree with me that it is conservative. But I thought that was obvious.

Bryan you are correct of course. I was wrong. But the crime issue is exclusively a Conservative issue. There is something in the conservative psyche which is obsessed with all things security. it seems they can never have too much. Maybe that is why the Tories signed that bill to enable the American military to enter Canada if invited. What is that about???? insecurity. Why? The only country that ever invaded Canada was America. So now they can do what Hitler did in Austria, invade claiming they were invited. Just great. Brilliant in fact. Brilliantly stupid.

Warren yes there is something in our drinking water. It has been there since Walkerton. Privatization of water monitoring was a mike harris stroke of genius. People died and a still sick almost ten years later. Tell me again about how great conservatism is. Harris never listened to anyone. He knew better than everyone. It turns out he knew nothing and we are still suffering today in Ontario. He was like Harper, just give them tax breaks and the infrastructure will heal itself. Stupid. There is no other way to see it. Canadian infrastructure is in dire need of rebuilding and what does Harper do, give tax breaks. His tax break won’t come near paying for the repairs on my car due to horrible highways. stupid

bryan Harper broke the law. it was a bribe. mr. control freak harper knew all about the bribe. everyone in his government is on a short leash.

Once again the people of Ontario show their ignorance by voting for MP’s with no power base. No wonder Ontario gets ignored by the Conservatives.
Ontario should take a lesson from Quebec and make their vote count. Vote for the party that will forms the government and then at least you will have a say in what goes on in Ottawa. People in Urban Ontario especially Toronto are too stupid to realize that their vote is wasted voting for the useless Liberals.

The letter below went to the CBC ombudsman, Vince Carlin, today.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear Mr. Carlin:

CBC Radio 1’s news clips during Metro Morning
today could have been written in the HQ of the
Liberal Party.

If the words “Conservative Party” or the name of
the Saskatchewan politician who won were
mentioned, the mention was so fleeting it got
past me entirely. Not a word was heard of
Conservative reactions - no Conservative
mentioned, quoted, or heard from.

These “news” clips were exclusively Liberal
fanfaronade.

While agreeing that CBL is a “Toronto” station,
I must point out that these byelections were of
national importance. A thoughtful Torontonian
(or Burlingtonian for that matter) would want
to know:

* Where do they leave the seat count in the
House of Commons?

* Was there any trend in the popular vote?

* What does the Conservative party conclude
from them?

This is a formal complaint of “bias by omission”.
May I ask please:

* Does the CBC recognize that the “balance”
called for in its policies is upset by omission
of authentic news, i.e. does it recognize
bias by omission?

* What will the CBC do to address this “bias
by omission” problem that many listeners
have with CBC reporting and commentary?

Thank you.

Gord says:

This 39th parliament is the culmination of past governments that have manipulated Canada’s political and educational institutions to the detriment of our country and society. Canadians are mixed up culturally, so much so, we do not know or understand who we are or what we want to stand for. Byelections and Federal elections are just a game to be ignored. What Canadian citizen really cares about who is running our country? Most of our political representatives are unable to function as honest leaders. Since the end of the great wars, our Canadian culture has been diminished and allowed to devolve into the hands of immigrants that bring with them continuing racial strife. There are too many who do not want to live and work together to rebuild a strong honest society. Many immigrants of the last forty years have a contagion that is set on destroying a political system that once was revered by the world. Stephen Harper, being a strong honest leader, is constantly torn apart by unethical factions who do not have the interest of society at heart. Our educational system has been an encouragement for those laggards to attach themselves to the backs of hard working honest people that want to build a good society. Unfortunately the unethical are winning.

Steve,

With regard to Walkerton, get your fact right. Stan Cable had the tests indicating high levels of E.coli and he chose not to put chlorine in the water. He did this year after year putting his community at risk. Mr. Cable then lied to the media saying that Walkerton could not afford the tests and subsequently tried to falsify the records. The lab did its job and Mr. Cable did not.

How is criminal legligence causing death the fault of the lab or Mike Harris? The public has a right to expect a deparment head responsible for ensuring the safety of the drinking water to do his job. The public has a right to expect a public employee to do more than order a beer frig and drink on the job.

Mike Harris wasn’t perfect by any means but at least, pick a subject where he had some level of control and therefore, responsibility.

Harpers Conservative government has, over its short time in office, worked hard, in many areas, to solidfy Canada and it’s provinces. Keyto was only a vehicles to transfer Canadian monies - without helping ontain our own emissions. Environment was the key for Dion to harp on - and, in Alberta, he was most unwelcome as he was perceived a threat to our financial stability. Albertan’s have long memories of a former Liberal Prime Minister and his disastrous impact on Alberta.
At this time the economy is solid, despite the subprime mortgage fiasco and so far the government has maintained a high standard throughout the world and with the United States. Stephen Harper trained many years for the position he now holds - and, who can blame him for not being too happy with the media? One can hardly forget the earlier unkind treatment he had received. At this moment in time Canada, as a country, is functioning well and the politicians of the day should be satisfied to leave the status quo.
Thank you.
