The National Citizens Coalition (NCC) today announced that they will be launching a multi-media campaign to ensure that western farmers are given a choice in the marketing of their crops, and that the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly comes to an end.
“In March of 2007 western barley farmers voted 62% in favor of having a choice in the marketing of their crops,” said NCC President Peter Coleman. “The farmers have voted, and it is time for the Canadian Wheat Board and the federal government to allow them freedom to sell their crops to the customer of their choice.”
Ending the Wheat Board Monopoly and giving western farmers’ freedom of choice in marketing has been a priority of the NCC for years. While many western barley farmers have voted in favor of marketing their own crops, the Canadian Wheat Board continues to fight them at every turn.
“If the CWB is such a positive marketing agency for the selling of Canadian crops, then why haven’t eastern farmers bought into the program?” added Coleman. “The time has come for the Canadian Wheat Board to honour the vote of western farmers, and for the federal government to take the necessary steps to ensure that the farmer’s voice is heard.”
The NCC campaign will feature radio spots, billboards and newspaper advertisements to ensure our message gets out. In the 21st century it should not be a crime to market your own crops. Nor should the CWB be allowed to use pool money from farmers to fight those who want the freedom to market their own crops and believe that the CWB is not the best alternative.
