This commentary is a follow up to our last post, which generated a lot of great feedback.
A great column by Ezra Levant was published yesterday at the Globe and Mail online which you can read here.
Kudos to the Globe and Mail for posting this online but we have to ask where the main stream media has been on this issue. Are they still afraid to talk about the Danish Cartoons? Do they no longer feel it is necessary to protect free speech in this country? Do they continue to be worried about potential threats and damage to their premises by those who are offended by the cartoons?
We do not know the answers to these questions because the silence on this is deafening and truly disturbing. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are core values of any democratic society. All Canadians should be outraged by the process that Ezra Levant is going through at the Alberta Human Rights Commission, but sadly many could care less as we see a slow but steady erosion of rights and values that should be the hallmark of a country like Canada.
Enough is enough!
What can we do?
Politicians need to be told that Canadians want to stop funding Human Rights Commissions for ridiculous complaints like these. If there is any benefit to these kinds of commissions, it is that it has brought light to the fact that hard working Canadians are funding the kind of complaints that force freedom fighting Canadians like Ezra to appear in front of these Commissions to explain why he chose to express his freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Canadian taxpayer dollars should not go towards these kangaroo courts.
You need to write your politicians, call them, email them and tell them that this has got to stop. There should be no more funding of Human Rights Commissions if they continue to allow frivolous complaints be heard at taxpayer’s expense. If the government did not fund these complaints, our suspicion is these types of frivolous complaints would never get started in the first place. If individuals wish to pursue these complaints; they should put their own money up before such a complaint proceeds.
You can access your politicians email by clicking here. Please do so. Politicians are reactionary by nature and if we stay silent on this issue they will do nothing about it.
I believe that the Human Rights Commission is going to regret the day they took on a freedom fighter like Ezra Levant. We will continue to follow this story with great interest and we encourage you to stay involved as well.
Maybe the federal government should have a public inquiry on the whole issue of Human Rights Commissions and the significant waste of taxpayer dollars that keep these nonsensical commissions alive. We are not a fan of public inquiries but this is one that the National Citizens Coalition and its thousands of members might support.
