National Citizens Remembers Ken McDonald

The National Citizens Coalition was truly saddened last week with the passing of Ken McDonald.  Ken was a close friend of the NCC, a longtime member of the Board of Directors, a mentor, advisor, prolific writer, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Ken was 93 years young and had a mind that was unparalleled.  His memory and insight of political issues and events was a constant source of wisdom to many.

Miriam Alford and I were privileged to attend Ken’s memorial service on Friday, August 24th to pay our respects to a Canadian who loved his adopted country.  Ken was a bomber pilot for the Royal Air Forces during World War 2 and later trained Canadian troops at Camp Borden.  He also led a distinguished business career after coming to Canada in 1957.

The legacy of any one man is his family and friends, and in this regard Ken was truly blessed.  He had three children, 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Ken McDonald’s life was honoured on Friday with the participation of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  As former president of the National Citizens Coalition, Mr. Harper had the pleasure of knowing Ken, respecting his counsel and advice.  His attendance at the funeral showed his respect to an amazing Canadian.

Prime Minister Harper met with many of Ken’s family members, including his great grandchildren.  He also took the time to meet with the many air force cadets and veterans present.

Ken we are all proud to have known you, and sought your counsel.  You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.  May you rest in peace.

I feel a huge loss with the passing of Mr. McDonald for our country is short on statesmen. Our new political leaders such as the Paul Martin and Jack Layton type have shown no quality of which Canada can be proud. To lose such a example of what a Canadian ’should be’ is irreplaceable for we have few to teach us or to follow except perhaps PM Harper and now Minister of Defense Peter MacKay. Our list of true quality statemen ‘grows thin.’ Stand up Canadians and demand quality - for once!

Our deepest sympathy to the McDonald family. We sincerely hope that some members follow in this great man’s footseteps as he set the example.
God bless!

We’ve now lost a towering mind. A soldier/statesman of his ilk are the rarest of breeds. “Wind in the Heath” was a great book, one of his best I felt, although I enjoyed them all without exception. His articles will be sorely missed and garnered virtually nothing but praise.

Peter, thank you for your introduction to this most interesting man. A loss not only to his family and friends, but also to Canada.
I should warn tou though that Mr. McDonald will probably make a nocturnal visit to you regarding your reference to him being in the Royal Armed Force. The correct referernce is and always will be the ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Thanks and keep up the good works.

Dick Tafel says:

I never met Ken. But I had read his incisive messages for so many years, that I felt as if I did know him. Yes, he will surely be missed - by Canadians everywhere.

Thanks so much for the info you sent re Ken MacDonald. He was truly a great person and he will be sorely missed. I knew he and his wife through APEC, the English Rights organization which is , sadly no more. I shall miss reading his column in the magazine Dialogue. My most sincere sympathy goes out to his family.
