Disgust and Outrage!

Wanda Watkins is the mother of fallen Canadian soldier Pte. Lane Watkins, who was laid to rest on Monday July 16, 2007.  Shortly before her son’s funeral Mrs. Watkins read a family statement encouraging Canadians to be proud of our military and their efforts in Afghanistan.

“The deserve our respect.  In supporting them, you’ll make
our loss much easier to bear.”

For most Canadians these were heartfelt and courageous words from a grieving mother.  But it would seem that the humanity shown by Mrs. Watkins was lost on one Canadian blogger.

In yesterday’s post, Canadian Cynic tells Mrs. Watkins exactly what he thinks of her grieving. (Click here to read Canadian Cynic’s post, as the comments are far too vulgar to post on the NCC blog.)

There is no harm in disagreeing with Canada’s role in Afghanistan, but you have to question the human decency of any individual who takes their frustrations with the mission out on the grieving mother of a fallen soldier.  This woman has just laid her son to rest, and if we cannot show our troops some respect, at least have enough sense to respect the terrible loss this woman has endured.

Thank you Canadian Cynic for demonstrating to us that now more than ever, Canadians need to show their support for our troops.

Now you are going after bloggers? Who cares what some stupid left wing blogger says. You are just giving him more attention, which is what he craves.

Barry Amies says:

It seems the”cynic” has forgotten the reason he has the right to offer his free speech in that many Canadians defended the right to be free in the last two wars and allowed us to enjoy our freedom today at great sacrifice. I do not think we should give this much credibility as the person does not deserve it and neiother do his comments. He has no respect for anything but his opinion which is supported by very few, contrary to what he may believe. As I say do not give him any respect by printing his garbage.

The Canadian Cynic’s comments show that we as a Country need the ability to drop kick such low life people from our Country. Moronic hate communication is not what Canada is about.

I am not only embarrassed by Canadian Cynic’s post but realize that is why Canada is what has become, a nanny-state. If you can’t defend your point of view with honest and acceptable voice, then you have no right to ‘voice.’ This would also apply to the ‘environmental ‘groups who protest with their signs - and scream out those with opposing opinions. This response from Cynic is, unfortunately, the level of intelligence protestors exihibit - none.

The attack on Mrs. Watkins by the Canadian Cynic is just what you would expect. That’s why blogging has became so popular. Cowards hide behind the anonymity a Blog provides to spew their wrath. Cowards who do not have the courage to engage in face to face debate.

I am a second world war Vet who hit the beach in Normandy and suffered a major wound in action. Had we Canadians listend to cynics like this guy we would have cut and run in which case he would never have seen freedom.

Hans Rupprecht says:

This individual has managed, rather than just scrape the bottom, to punch through the bottom of the barrel.

While one may disagree with a country’s foreign policy, this in no way gives one moral authority to pour salt into open wounds of a grieving family.

If the writer was viciously trying to disgrace himself, he has succeeded in descending to a new low.

The phrase “No Heart and No Brains” comes to mind.

You say “There is no harm in disagreeing with Canada’s role in Afghanistan, but you have to question the human decency of any individual who takes their frustrations with the mission out on the grieving mother of a fallen soldier. ” I have a problem with it. I don’t believe the nonsense about supporting the troops but not the mission. The people that don’t support the mission don’t support the troops either. In my experience it’s just another feel good Canadian thing to say to give one cover with acceptance. And as far as decency goes the left talk about it but display very little of it toward those that don’t worship at the church of liberalism. All the peace love and tolerance they claim as their virtue is rarely realized. Another sound good feel good lie the left live by. They make me sick.

Glen Bogart says:

I think we cerainly have a choice - fight here or fight there. It is truly sad that anyone has to die, but as in the 1st & 2nd world wars, it was all for the greater good. 100s of thousands died for freedom and there was not outcry like we have today for a fraction of the amount of soldiers lost, but the threat is probably greater especially considering we are now infiltrated with thousands of potential terrorists.

Remember not all Muslems are terrorist but all terrorist are Muslems.

I don’t beliive Mr. Harper and the current government would be exposing himself to all the neagativity if it wasn’t absolutely necessary for the greater good of Canadians. I am sure they have information that we need not have privy too, that justifies this. Perhaps even Mr. Bush is not all wet either.

The comment that in the 40’s Layton and the like would have been tried for treason should betreated as more than a comment . it is treason.

David Culham says:

What an ignorant, self-centred cluts the writer of this blog represents. This blogger give a genuine cynic a bad name. He lacks analysis, grace, knowledge and any deceit understanding of the world. Thankfully he does not represent the thousands of Canadians I have meet over my long and productive life. His feelings originate in a childlike narcissism. He is a soft candy arse that does not even represent the honest left. There are so few real right wing in terms of world definition that I doubt he has ever met one.
While, I find it distasteful, we need to be aware of the whole spectrum of opinion making up public opinion.
He is crude but not tough enough to be honest.

Warren says:

I don’t even need to read Canadian Cynic’s blog to reaffirm the sad reality that hypocrisy and ego-centric sentiment run deep within the Canadian left, ie, NDP’rs & many Liberal supporters. These are the people who claim ownership of the creative rights to establishing “Canadian Values”, slavishly adopted & disseminated by the vast majority of Canada’s print & electronic media voices as the national Holy Grail. Is it any wonder that most Canadian election outcomes veer left, having been determined by people who spend 15 minutes to read or hear this stuff and then take it to the poll as if it were fundamental truth. What more does it take to motivate the “Silent Majority” to overcome its collective despair and get out and vote?

Foon Der says:

Any use of profanity invalidates the user. Stooping to gutter language is the surest sign of moral bankruptcy. CC’s given reason for opposition to the mission is feigned concern for Canadian soldiers. But what about the 10 Canadians a day who die in motor vehicle accidents, suicides, homicides and other accidents. They live in low risk Canada and we loses 4000 a year due to often preventable causes. He is the one who is squeamish. Anyone who uses the “F” word on another person is morally bankrupt loses any respect and receives no further consideration from me. I will not be visiting his site to listen to his response to my response.

Alan Strangis says:

I’m sorry, but Canadian Cynic does have a point.

The “Support the Troops EQUALS Support the Mission” concept needs to be thrown out for the nonsensical garbage that it is, regardless of whether one supports THIS particular mission or not. It shouldn’t even be a point of debate, but somehow it is, just like (and I hate to say this) our friends south of the border. We don’t need any more illogical and polarizing rhetoric, from either side (something Canadian Cynic is ALSO guilty of).

In short, I do agree that there was quite some venom towards Wanda Watkins, but beyond that, he’s entirely right.

GWarner says:

If CC knew what he was talking about he’d be dangerous…but he doesn’t & isn’t.
Anyone who has lived in Afghanistan feels great empathy for the people & would hope someone could lend a hand to help them. Mrs. Watkin’s son was a brave lad indeed to soldier there & his parents can be truly proud of him. We are not in the country to loot or gain in any way but help make the world a bit more secure. CC might recall Afghanistan was bin Laden’s lair. He might also consider his own life there would not be worth a fairy’s breath in a windstorm.
We are helping the helpless while trying to repair the civic destruction the Soviets caused. At the time of their invasion in 1979 it was already the 12th poorest nation on the planet. It is a noble calling to help the Afghans & of course a very perilous one.
If CC had his way, we would leave the Afghan children in danger & dispair, young men to random conscription by the Taliban, & women to living nightmare or worse.
Of all soldiers I have met, Chinese, Turk, or American, the Canadians have impressed me most as a highly intelligent, educated, trained, disciplined & dedicated lot. In Afghanistan they are doing a profound service to humanity; not just for us here at home.
Dr. Johnson once famously said, “Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier…” Consider that thought CC; maybe you could yet try being a soldier instead of just envying them their courage & company.
