We went and attended the Toronto city council vote yesterday to see if Miller and his left leaning city council would do the right thing and withdraw their ridiculous motion that was going to have emergency services and fire trucks remove their support the troops decals from their vehicles this fall.
It was apparent when we got there that this was not going to be an ordinary council meeting. There were many media folks there and lots of cameras. This was going to be a photo op that Mayor Miller was not going to enjoy. When he arrived in council chambers, it was apparent from his body language that he was uncomfortable.
He rose to ask for a moments of silence for the brave soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to this great country yesterday in Afghanistan. Everyone in the audience rose and a two minute silence ensued.
When that was finished Miller said that the death of the three soldiers changed his mind on this issue and that he did not want anyone in Canada to think that his council was anti troops and not supportive of them. The reality was he took so much media heat and with so many calls and emails to his office to complain, even he knew he was on the wrong side of this issue.
Even more disgraceful was five or so councilors literally going to hide behind the chamber hall when they realized that a second vote was being held so all councilors would be allowed a chance to vote and support this unanimous motion. This group of cowards literally turned around and left the chamber hall and went back into a room. One of the councilors went to find them and came back out and loudly said “go ahead with the vote, they are not coming out.”
Kudos to Councillor Frances Nunziata’s call to extend the support the troops campaign. She did a great job of pushing Miller’s pals on city council to do the right thing. Also a strong thank you to Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington who kept this issue alive in the media and rallied strong support to continue this program.
In the end Mayor Miller did the right thing and he should get the credit for that. The sad part is that he only did the right thing because he was pushed to do so.
