Mayor Miller’s Flip Flop

We went and attended the Toronto city council vote yesterday to see if Miller and his left leaning city council would do the right thing and withdraw their ridiculous motion that was going to have emergency services and fire trucks remove their support the troops decals from their vehicles this fall.

It was apparent when we got there that this was not going to be an ordinary council meeting. There were many media folks there and lots of cameras. This was going to be a photo op that Mayor Miller was not going to enjoy. When he arrived in council chambers, it was apparent from his body language that he was uncomfortable.

He rose to ask for a moments of silence for the brave soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to this great country yesterday in Afghanistan. Everyone in the audience rose and a two minute silence ensued.

When that was finished Miller said that the death of the three soldiers changed his mind on this issue and that he did not want anyone in Canada to think that his council was anti troops and not supportive of them. The reality was he took so much media heat and with so many calls and emails to his office to complain, even he knew he was on the wrong side of this issue.

Even more disgraceful was five or so councilors literally going to hide behind the chamber hall when they realized that a second vote was being held so all councilors would be allowed a chance to vote and support this unanimous motion. This group of cowards literally turned around and left the chamber hall and went back into a room. One of the councilors went to find them and came back out and loudly said “go ahead with the vote, they are not coming out.”

Kudos to Councillor Frances Nunziata’s call to extend the support the troops campaign. She did a great job of pushing Miller’s pals on city council to do the right thing. Also a strong thank you to Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington who kept this issue alive in the media and rallied strong support to continue this program.

In the end Mayor Miller did the right thing and he should get the credit for that. The sad part is that he only did the right thing because he was pushed to do so.

Unfortunately Mayor Miller’s attitude is one which those who do not live in Toronto associate with those who do live in Toronto. The “goody-goody we’re the centre of the universe” attitude is the reason Toronto is held in such low esteem by the rest of the country. I would have thought he’d have merely asked that the ribbons be banned, along with handguns and everything else he doesn’t like.

And they wonder why we call it “HOGTOWN”
Absolutely disgraceful - thank the good Lord when I wore a uniform our elected representatives were supportative of our Armed Forces - of course in those days we had an Armed Forces, in fact we had three - Army; Navy; and Air Force.
I was proud to wear Air Force Blue, and I’m very proud of those that wear our uniform today (and tomorrow).

A huge problem for most of us in Canada is that these left wing socialists in central Canada have away to much political clout when it comes to politics. Do they deserve the freedom that has been handed to them by our troops? As a second world war vet who suffered wounds, I believe they do not.

We need a political party called ‘flip-flop’ - too many politicians are unable to see the forest for the ‘popular’ vote - Liberals and NDP’ers are the masters of this game but we, Canadians, have to call them on it and if there is a weakness in all this it is - you get what you vote for - This mayor is of low calibre in my view. Flip-flop or not, he has shown his lack of credibility.

Toronto City Council is a bastion of leftists. I am apalled at the attitude of Canadaians towards the Afghan mission. If Afghanistan falls to the Taliban it will become a training ground for terrorists, a defeat for freedom and democracy, and a victory for dictatorial muslim regimes who want to destroy democratic countries and impose their religious beliefs on all non Muslims. Our troops are attempting to provide ordinary Afghans with security of the person; freedom to practice their religion as they see fit; and responsible government. As a peacekeeper I saw many missions that failed in that regard and am not at all proud of the role I played on behalf of the UN in installing a bloody dictator in the Congo. Our soldiers understand the stakes–Canadians do not. Are we to undergo another fiasco in history such as happened prior to 1939 when Germany was pillaging Europe and the rest of the world stood by?

Don’t let the 5 or 6 scummy socialists who did not attend the vote get away with it. Their names should be published. From the Toronto Sun I know that 2 of the culprits were Ubber Socialist McConnell and Janet “It’s Mike Harris’ fault’ Davis.

Who were the rest ???

Who can expect much from a mayor who has managed to create a monumental debt for Toronto despite receiving millions in tax dollars from the surrounding GTA? What is surprising is that a leader as economic challenged and ideologically woolie has not been put out at the curb with the trash.

Miller & others in Toronto seem to believe that Toronto is the centre of the universe, a world class city when in fact, it is just a very provincial, one-horse town. Toronto is comparable to Buffalo (except that Buffalo has better architecture) not New York, Tokyo, London, or Berlin.

That the mayor actually concerns himself with such trivialities as ribbon bumperstickers (not meant to denegrate their symbolism but merely in terms of the physical nature of the item, it is afterall a bumper sticker) is phenominal. Why would he not just leave such an issue up to these departments to decide for themselves. It’s like the CEO deciding on the colour of the office carpet. Yet we know that the purpose is political to send a message about what Mayor Miller thinks our foreign policy should be. The mayor of Toronto is responsible for running a city not dictating foreign policy.

Only a few years ago, Toronto city councilors were debating whether a manhole cover should be referred to as a manhole cover, a personhole cover or a maintenance cover. It is little wonder the real problems such as transportation infrastructure, water treatment and garbage never get solved from 1 decade to the next. Toronto is becoming so difficult to get around, that businesses have been migrating to the GTA for the past 20 years.

RE: WHICH COUNCIL MEMBERS DIDN’T ATTEND
From what we know the two who were the most opposed publically and ducked out were vice chair of the toronto police services board Pam Mcconell(which is incredibly embarassing in itself), and Janet Davis. Also councillor Gord Perks left for the second vote because he felt it was embarassing for those who were abstaining (the real embarassment Mr. Perks was thw flip flop the city council pulled). And the three councillors who were absent due to other business reasons were Adam Giambrone, Anthony Perruzza, and Frank Di Giorgi.

Comrade Chairman Miller and the rest of his thralls are a disgrace to our country. So he turned around and did the right thing. He certainly didn’t do it for the troops or their families, he did it only for his personal PR quotient. These people make pond scum look good.

I feel for those people who live in Toronto and who have functioning minds, it would be terrible to have deal with the endless onslaught of moronic action coming out of City Hall.

Warren says:

Surely no one thinks Mayor Miller was being disingenuous or was in any way dissembling in his explanation for reversing his position on allowing Toronto’s emergency services “troops” to support their kindred spirits in the Military by displaying “Support The Troops” decals, do they? After all, wasn’t his explanation perfectly reasonable, that a mere 57 military fatalities to date were insufficient for Toronto’s head burgomaster to “buy into” the campaign, whereas 3 more fatalities on voting day at Council, making it an even 60, clearly tipped the scale and, therefore, Mr. Miller’s position on the matter. Eminently logical my dear Watson, errr, Miller.

But now, the bigger question! How can he turn this situation into an opportunity to raise civic taxes or user fees in Toronto the Good and possibly hire some more mandarins? Hmmm. Maybe the solution lies within the signage by-laws…….

Having two of my family in the military, I was appalled by the Mayor’s first decision but now applaud him for having the gumption to reverse his stand. Shame on the 5 council members. Some message to send to our brave troops!

Cassandra says:

As a daughter of the WWII veteran, thank you to the Welter’s and all of the Canadians who serve our country with distinction and integrity. There are many of us who appreciate the sacrifices that your family is making for our country and for the security of our world. Don’t let the turkeys get you down.

Unfortunately, there are many Canadians who are not really aware of what life is like outside Canada. Even with 911 and the Air India bombing, terrorism is not a reality to most Canadians. It is only a matter of time before we learn like London, Paris, Belfast, Bali, Jerusalem, and Berut. Sometimes, peace is something that requires military intervention and sacrifices when all the talk in the world is just so much hot air.

Even the role of peacekeeping has changed. Canadians are not comfortable with the more muscular requirements of today’s peacekeeping which respond to the conditions on the ground. Eventually, we will learn what others already know. There are no simple answers in international diplomacy.

Foon Der says:

When Jean ChrĂ©tien was first elected he went right to work to cancel the EH101 contract for military and SAR helicopters. Did anyone keep track of how many people died because the aging Sea Kings either went down because of mechanical failure or were unable to fulfill their mission because they were forever in the shop? Nope! The Mayor of TO thinks he can get away with changing tack whenever the wind is against him. Most people also do not remember that it cost well over $500 million to cancel that EH101 contracts, money that could have been used more wisely elsewhere. ChrĂ©tien gutted the military because he knew spineless Canadians would not hold him accountable, which they didn’t. He was forced out of politics not by the electorate but by his own party machinery. But I concur that this flip-flop by Mayor Miller is very transparent and he is not personally convinced about the principle of supporting your own team but did so under pressure. Same goes for those yahoos that say Canadian troops may be guilty of war crimes for turning over prisoners that may be tortured by the Afghan government. The enemy does not live by these Marquis of Queensbury rules so I don’t lose even a moment’s sleep over that red herring.
