Will Common Sense Prevail in Toronto?

You would think that in a time of war, and in a time of a NATO sanctioned mission to free oppressed people in Afghanistan that our politicians would be behind our troops. Think again.

In today’s Toronto Sun you can read about the cold shoulder that Mayor David Miller and certain city councillors in Toronto are attempting to give to our men and women overseas in Afghanistan and abroad. The city council will be voting today at 2pm on whether to keep support our troops ribbons on the back of Toronto fire trucks and ambulances as long as our soldiers are in Afghanistan.

Is the Mayor completely oblivious to the fact that not so long ago 17 men were charged with plotting a terrorist attack to blow up buildings in Toronto? This shows what a fair-weather friend Miller is to the first responders of Toronto and our nation. He should stick to raising taxes and wrecking family businesses, which are things he’s actually good at.

Luckily someone like Councillor Frances Nunziata is calling on the council to extend the ribbon campaign after she received calls from outraged veterans. These are the same veterans who have shaped our countries character and integrity by fighting for the ideas and freedoms Canada is supposed to stand for. Mayor Miller says he supports the troops, and yet he won’t intervene on this issue. “There are calls from people saying, ‘why are you expressing support for the war in Afghanistan’? My perspective is that troops - once they are put in harm’s way - everybody has to support them.” said Miller.

As an organization, The National Citizens Coalition has raised over 30,000 dollars that went to a support fund for the families of our brave soldiers. We are proud of our armed forces. They deserve our respect and most certainly our support.

Well Mr. Mayor it’s time to show some character and back up your words. Let’s hope that at 2 o’clock this afternoon, common sense prevails.

Robert Anes says:

When I first learned that David Miller was running for mayor (I think that was 7 years ago) I knew nothing about him, but instinctively knew he was the wrong man. Since then he has done nothing but prove my first impressions were right on. What a disaster! Am I that much smarter than the voters of Toronto?
They constantly prove in every way they don’t know how to vote, be it municipally, provincially or federally. We gave up going to Toronto years ago, no desire to be attacked by hostile “homeless” vagrants.

Hans Rupprecht says:

Brilliant plan Mayor Miller!!

Another 3 soldiers die in the service of their country yesterday, and the luminaries that lead Toronto are going to give the CF in Afghanistan the “Bums Rush”.

Now there is gratitude for you, Canadian soldiers die on your behalf and you denote your support by removing “Support Our Troops” decals.

How very patriotic of you!

As Samuel Johnson noted in 1775:

False “patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels!”

JOHN BARNES says:

There is no question about it!!!
WHATEVER WAY, HOWEVER WE CAN…….

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!!!!

BE THANKFUL THAT THEY ARE THERE!!!!
They are doing what our parents did, protecting this great country, making it what it is, a safe place to live, even for those cowardly whimps that think we should’nt be there.

They need our support, it’s the very least we can do, a parade or two would’nt hurt either, and not just on rememberance day either…..

Wish I could do more for them, including going!

Where are the Mayor’s values? Not where they should be. Sounds like he comes from Quebec when he can’t see how important it is to support our troops- they are giving up everything including thier lives for the freedoms of others and our land. Mayor Miller had better smarten up because his days could be numbered in his office. . D.F.

The stand by Toronto’s mayor to remove support the troops symbol from city vehicles shows that even though people are ‘elected’ to run a city (prov/country etc.) does not mean they come ‘complete’ with brains.
Just like the commentary I read, I too take the same opinion, ‘when you support firefighters, you aren’t supporting FIRES’ - ditto for our troops. Really pathetic on the part of the Toronto mayor.

Support the troops, they are incredible people.
Sadly though, they are involved in a bogus and contrived war for “control” of those “oppressed” people. Lets not forget that the so called oppressors were just fine as long as they cooperated with the US.
If you really want to support our troops, lets bring them home from a pointless war of US Empire building. Lets stop them dying in a foriegn desert for nothing!

Paul Morgan says:

Miller is in politics, and blows with the wind. This isn’t a debate on Afganistan, we did that and our elected representatives made a decision, this is about men in service supporting others in service.

Thank goodness there are still people that recognize that men in service deserve support for doing the job they were sent to do.

I certainly don’t want fireman coming to my home and arguing about whether I am “politically correct” before he rushes in to save my family.

Is the popualtion of Toronto totally apathetic, or ignorant of what their councilor’s and Mayor’s activities?
How could they vote for such high tax, meddlesome fools?
I hope they are unaware and not just stupid.

Alex Brown says:

JC i’m curious, how were the so called oppressors just fine as long as they cooperated with the US? Last time I checked womens opression and state terrorism weren’t ‘fine’. Also Canada’s mission has absolutely nothing to do with US empire building. Canada is not in Iraq, nor have relations between the two countries been particularly strong over the past few years. If our soldiers dying for the freedom of opressed people and fighting evil is wrong then I don’t want to be right.

The sentence “These are the same veterans who have shaped our countries character”, contains a mistake: it should be “country’s” not “countries”.

I come from generations of miliatry. My grandfather fought in the lst world war and was wounded and carried shratnel in his leg for the rest of his life; my father (a French Canadian) fought in Korea and in Germany; my ex-husband was in the Navy and his father in the Air Force.

You people know nothing about the military. This ribbon campaign doesn’t help anyone! I am not a Miller fan at all, but the comments here are ridiculous! These wars aren’t about freeing any oppressed people. People had better lives in both of these countries before the west interferred. These wars are about filling greedy, lawmakers pockets. Who has benefited from these wars - politicians friends. Who has suffered the greatest casualties - ordinary people, the women and children killed, young and old men maimed, military personnel who don’t get proper care or treatment once they come back….give me a break……and open your eyes to the reality of what war is about…and its not ribbons!!

David Murrell says:

One idea for the NCC to consider would be to construct a petition, to crculate among those interested, whereby we would sign a pledge to boycott Toronto as a tourist destination — if and when the pro-troop car decals are taken off the trucsk and cars.

Since Toronto has become a left-wing embarrassment, we should do our part and not visit the city.

Keith Hesse says:

I have been on a virtual boycott of Toronto since early ’90s. I sure have not made a dent in it’s economy alone but collectively it will. I do this out of principal more than anything.

It’s todays “All about ME” thinking that continues to hurt all of us. Toronto is constantly screaming poor and calling for money without controlling spending. I have a friend on the verge of bankruptcy because of his money mismanagement. He grosses over $100,000 and little to show for it. He too begs for forgiveness and blames everyone else for his lack of responsibility.

So now, because of our lack of courage to stand up for Human Rights, I see that Toronto will now take off Support our Troops to something about a Rainbow. This sounds very political to garner support for the council. But it’s my belief that when we divide our selves up into different factions, we become more divided as a community and therefore a nation. Please understand this when it comes to different cultural communities. We see people being displaced because of dfferent cultures. Peoples do tend to stick with their own cultures but to support a group because of their sexuality, race or background culture or skin colour is discrimination.

Good people for humanitarian reasons are being injured, many fatally in the most volatile environments and Toronto is turning their backs on them for politics.

Please reconsider.

Thank you

David Long says:

Although I support our troops and their valiant efforts and sacrifices to carry out the government approved murder of the Taliban, I continue to wonder why we think that killing people solves any problems. Let us reason sensibly for just a second or so — when our own native people blockaid railroads and roads and hold citizens to ransom for months and contempt our courts and our laws, why don’t we just shoot them? It’s supposed to work in Aphganistan, why not here? Why? Because we KNOW it does not work and only creates more enemies and more terrorists. Canada had a great reputation world-wide for being constructive peace-keepers. We’ve blown it and in the process made our country far less safe than before.

Once again — we look at penny annie governments but refusde to look at the actual leaders in power FEDERAL… here you have a Mayor who basically is monkey see monkey domentality…
CLOSE THE BORDERS TO THESE SO CALLED REFUGEES FROM WHERE-EVER AND CLEAN HOUSE ….wHY BLAME A MAYOR FOR SOMETYHING HE CANNOT STOP “fREEDOM OF EXPRESSION” … Again we waste debate ($$$$’s) on non-issues in municipal gov’t. when the hell are we going to get to the point and stop the onslaught …..Because 17 people is not a small gang ….D’ont you wonder how many are still out there????
Our troops are supported we don’t need this mans approval……if you as a people continue to rely on government for answers!!!!!I feel sorry for the future of this Country>>>> I consider myself Aboriginal as I was Born in this Country to protect Canada…Because my parents wanted it that way….They lost faith in their country (DUE TO POLITICAL NONSENSE)… I am not about to do the same. Close the borders..

Allan Johnson says:

Higher levels of Government have made decisions of how and where to use our Military. Far be it for a Mayor or any Alderman to override or come against the decisions of a higher authority. Like it or not. Many decisions are made that I don’t necessarily agree with or like, but I have a duty to support all of those people who were elected to make decisions on my behalf for the good of our country. I support our troops for the decision they have made to protect our country and other people who are unable to protect themselves.

Update

I went to see democracy in action at City Hall. Miller did a complete about face on this and council passed a 39-0 motion to extend the support the troops program for the fire department and EMS. It was also added that the police department was free to be involved.

There were a few WW2 vets there as well and a fairly busy non politician crowd there. Lots of media.

Miller talked about not wanting Toronto having the reputation of not supporting the troops. In my opinion, he just got way too many emails and phone calls to do anything but back down from his original position.

For those of you who called and emailed- congrats- the right thing was finally done today because of all the pressure from members of the NCC and many other people.

Maybe Miller can now return to items of substance and actually start to do something for the city of Toronto- we will see.

b.broderick says:

We should support our troops everywhere we can. Miller and his councillors are asses.
People in Toronto should fight any increases in taxes as proposed by Miller and his cronies. City of Toronto should manage the budget and quit spending. Taxes in Toronto as proposed by Miller and his cronies will only add to inflation and will probably spread to other areas. How much is enough. Miller and the councillors can vote themselves increases in pay and benefits whenever they wish to do so as they have done in the past, while the poor taxpayers keep getting fleeced. TAXPAYERS, IT IS TIME TO REVOLT AND I MEAN REVOLT.

G.H. Nickerson says:

One would conclude that Mayor Miller never served Canada in uniform. His behaviour is degrading to the memory of all the young Canadians who have given their very lives to defend Canada in the past two World Wars. The young Canadian men and women in Afganstan are protecting and defending Canada, indeed the western world, from barbarians of the most degrading order. One hesitates to ponder the disrespectful manner in which these male barbarians of Afganstan treat children and women in their miserable society, let alone those men who may have offended their Islamic laws!
One suspects that Mayor Miller is defending his selfish political position and his massive Islamic vote in the Toronto reigon. The world has gone this route only 73 years ago and men like Mayor Miller have not fared well in memory!

This what’s wrong with our country, there are too many nit pickers, cant stay focused on the right things.
Since I heard about this my blood pressure went up 30 points, cant believe it.Its only recently that we have given our troops the support they should/must have. OF COURSE WE MUST SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

I would like to know who voted Miller as Mayor the second time? Everyone I spoke to said they didn’t want him for the second term. How come?
He and the opposing councillors are wimps and would be the first ones to run for cover and call on the army if the war came close to them. We need to continue to fight the battle for freedom and to protect our way of life.

Your comments are right on the mark.

Mike Ocksbig says:

As red flags soar high over city hall it seems fitting that Toronto’s mayor would be the first to throw his hands up and surrender to dreaded “support our troops” ribbons. Today, in foreign deserts our troops fight to the death because Canada has a primary responsibility to protect its peoples from any threat such as Nazis, cold war Russia and in modern days terrorist. Afghanistan was the birth place of the 9-11 attack which happened be the closest threat our nation has faced in many decades. Here is my question “How does pulling our troops out and letting the Taliban back into power help the people of Canada, let alone the Afghanis?’”. The choices are clear David. Stay and help the people of Afghanistan rebuild basic infrastructure and nurture a young democracy. Leave and let the Taliban back into power so they can again deny education after the age of eight, horribly oppress women’s rights and fuel new terrorist attacks aimed at your western world.

Alex,

I think you miss the point. The oppression and brutality were condoned until the “US, trained, equipped and installed” Taliban government decided not to play ball with Washington anymore.
Suggest you read the “Surreal Politcs of War”
http://www.commondreams.org/views06/1203-21.htm
I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t be doing humanitarian work, I’m suggesting the US should fight the wars it starts, itself.
I put a very high value on Canadian blood.
Read the article, I look forward to your thoughts.
