Harper’s Stance on Global Warming and Kyoto a Breath of Fresh Air

The focal point of the G8 Summit this year has been the doomsday scenario Global Warming presents. With most leaders from the eight powerhouse countries marching to the beat of Al Gore’s drum, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has shifted a lot of attention towards himself by standing up for his governments’ belief that Kyoto’s targets are unattainable.

This article in the National Post, discusses why Harper will be testing the patience of Canada’s major allies after his government walked away from international targets of cutting Greenhouse Gases in April. The Prime Minister feels that meeting Kyoto’s goals would cripple Canada financially. He has instead brought with him a plan he will propose during the summit. A plan he feels is more sensible and achievable for Canada.

Regardless of how some of the G8 countries feel on this matter, it is refreshing to see Prime Minister Harper buck the trend of conforming to Kyoto’s costly and unattainable targets, while at the same time working to better Canada’s environment at a price Canadians can afford.

Yes, for god’s sake Stephen, don’t set some goals that challenge us. Please, please please take the typical Canadian wimpy way out - leave technical and business challenges to those countries who have the productivity and culture that thrive on such things. Now let me get back to watching my threepeet episode of Sopranos followed by a Paris Hilton update.

Harper is on the right track but the Eastern Canadians will never support him. What a shame! He has the best ideas to save this planet but he’s a Westerner so they will say “NO!” to everyone of his proposals. So sad for Canada!

‘Ray for Harper! But not far enough. Why doesn’t he and our Conservative Government throw out the whole thing! Global Warming is a FARCE, a downright SWINDLE, and LIES, LIES, LIES.

Just wait until 2008 when we begin to cool down and the cycle will reverse.

What does it matter what policy Harper expounds on any given day (or minute) When it comes out of a proven liars mouth, it is useless trash. Like most issues, he has switched sides so many times, it makes one dizzy to try to keep up.

Long time conservative voter, but no more.

Thank Heavens someone has the common sense to stand up to this left wing nonsense about Kyoto….what a bunch of crap…I am glad to see Harper tell it like it is in spite of all of the politically correct knuckleheads who think the sky is falling..if it is there is nothing we can do anyway so get on with some of the many other problems or move to Norway and hug a tree…..

It’s beginning to sound like we have a prime minister who is not afraid to do what he thinks is right. I was getting sick and tired of phony politicians who make decisions based on which way the wind happens to be blowing. A country needs a leader with a vision and it appears that PM Harper has a view of what Canada can be, what our role in the world should be and he has the courage to stand up to the whinners, the complainers and the fear mongers. He’ll get my vote next time around.

This certainly is a breath of fresh air. One person in my graeter community who isn’t an environmentalist but something else which I will try not to spell says it’s climatic change. I am sure Mr. Harper might believe in that state, too.

More like a “breath of hot air”. It does appear his viewpoint has never changed and he still sees climate change as a commie plot Thank God Canadians aren’t as naive.

Hooray for PM Harper. The G-8 leaders should take time out to view the BBC program”The Great Global Warming Swindle” and then maybe they might understand the real picture. The people like David Suzuki are milking this issue for as much money as they can get personnally and they really don’t care what happens to the economy as long as they get their pockets full before everyboby wises up to their real agenda.

What we need now is not an alternate carbon tax but some really scientific input on the subject. Warming since 1850 to today is a whole 0.7 C. When will the real leaders stand up and do what is right , rather then follow the trendy polls in order to get a majority?

Gunter Verhuegen, the EU industrial commissioner says Europe has met its Kyoto targets on paper by purchasing credits while in reality, emissions in Europe have risen. He says the expenditure of $billions is making European business non competitive on the world stage and causing energy efficient industries to look to relocating to non Kyoto countries. Most of Europe’s rights to pollute have been bought from China which is about to become the world’s leading polluter. Go figure.

Stephen Harper is doing the right thing. A focus on clean environment is great but global warming is a separate issue and only sets up an unacountable situation that is bound to turn into another “adscam”. tony says:

Global warming is a reality but the question to be asked is “Why is it happening?”
some 45 years ago in school I was informed by the Geography teacher that the world was infact cooling and we were headed to another mini ice age. How opinions change.
I recently consulted the rear section of our atlas we have at home and in the section on climate explains the changes that have occured over the last hunderds of million years. Before the tectonic plates of the earth’s crust began to move the Earth was a place od shallow seas and swamps and plains. In the last few million years the mountains have arizen, the continents moved with the wind flows disrupted and the oceans divided.
Huge mountain ranges impede the airflows and create huhe rainfalls on the winward side and arid deserts on the other. Ocean currents driven by winds carry the heat from the tropics to the higher latitudes and vice versa.
In short climate change is a constant.
Another section of the atlas describes the movement of the planets around the sun in their individual orbits. The Earth’s orbit moves closer or further from the sun every 100,000 years or so. In addition the earth’s axis changes angle varying from more to less acute and back every 22000 years or so.
As these cycles intertwine it results in 20,000: 40,000: 60,000: 80,000: and 100,000 plus year cycles. The extremes being the accute angles and far or close distance from the sun.
For example: As the angle gets more acute the seasons become more extreme. As the Earth gets closer to the sun the seasons warm up. If the polar region is pointed more at the sun in the Summer then the polar region will be warmer and the ice will melt. the ice will melt all over the globe as the Earth’s orbit gets closer to the Sun.
This goes some way to explain the mini ice over the last 1 million years and the mini ice ages every 20,000 years.
We appear to be comming out of the last ice age 10,000 plus years ago which is about the length of time of this warming period. Even in the last 10,000 years there have been minor occillations of a few hundred years.
I remember reading that 2000 years ago the earth was generally warmer than today and about 400 ad it cooled off again. (900-1300 ad was another warmer period and it was quite cooler until the 1800’s when it warmed again through to today.
None of the previous climate change was attributed to human activity so are affecting it today. We may be, but the history suggests that it is a largely natural occuring phenomenom.
We are certainly guilty of polution and adding contaminants to the environment. so we should concentrate our efforts on retaining purity of the air and water. get rid of the chemicals.
Other things that appear to affect temperature is the activity of the sun itself. If the activity results in increased radiation then all the Solat system planets will be warmer. Some reports suggest that this is infact happening now.

Stephen Harper as the PM of Canada must not only do what is right for the country but he must educate the country as to the causes of global warming. This needs to be done directly by government advertisements and through the schools and univercities and the educational systems.
This is one area where ignorance is not bliss as we are being overwhelmed by mis and disinformation by those who seek to control the world and impliment one world government. this is otherwise known as being ruled by the self styled eletes and held in perpetual slavery for our own good, of course. Yeh right!!

So Stephan Harper stands for freedom through less government. I’m for him.

b.broderick says:

Unless we get China and India committed to reduce emiissions, we are wasting our time. China and India economy are growing at a record rate and they will be contributing to global warming faster that all the other countries in the world. China and India have more than 50& of the population of the world and are still growing and are producing more cars and carbon emmissions than all the world put together.

I hope the Candian Govt. is not going to use “global warming” as another excuse to raise taxes. We are taxed to death now. What we need is smaller governments and less waste and grants and give aways.

Josh says:

The real swindle is the conservatives claim that they care about the environment. They do not have a plan, they have a bunch of disparate and unfocused iniitiatives aimed at appeasing Canadians. Public opinion has pushed him to take some action, and nothing more. He cares nothing for the environment, nor for holding to the ideals he espoused as an opposition leader. What does it mean to be a Conservative? It appears to mean about as much is it means to be a Liberal: no central policies; just an eye to the headlines.

And people should be more cautious in quoting to the Great Global Warming Swindle. As a former journalist, there are red flags all over this one. And when some of the scientists that appear in the documentary speak out against the way their comments were edited (and manipulated) to support the show’s argument, then we should take a more sceptical view. If the show is edited to support the central thesis, then can we really trust that thesis?

Foon Der says:

Most people are not aware the when Chretien signed up to our Kyoto pledge he did so purely for international political reasons. He did not think he was going have to do much to meet our commitment and therefore would not affect our standard of living. On the other hand the Greens saw this as the opportunity to try to return our country into the pristine poster boy of the world that they could use to influence the really big industrial polluters of the world - USA and China - the USA because it is the most advanced society and China because its industry is not regulated. Well it backfired because the EU rejected Canada’s claim to be able to use its vast forests as carbon sinks as credit to meetings its Kyoto pledge. The targets were terribly optimistic (12% below 1990 GHG emissions). Since 1990 our population has grown from 27 million to close to 32 million which is an 18% increase. Yet our fearless leader committed our country to reduce its GHG emissions by 12%. Even if we all collectively decrease our personal GHG emissions by 10% our country’s GHG emissions would still increase. I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t know of too many ways to reduce my GHG emissions. My house is difficult to retrofit and as my city gets bigger and bigger I have to drive more not less. I have replaced as many incandescent bulbs in my house as possible and I have a thermostat that can be programmed. I recycle all the cardboard, glass, tin and newsprint. I was my vehicles only after they become filthy. I would rather not see other people lose their jobs over a perceived need to meet an unrealistic target will not accomplish the goal of climate change. When all the cards are on the table and doomsday never comes people will know they have been sucked in by Chicken Little and the boy who cried “Wolf”, I hope we can recover from our self inlicted wounds.

I for one am glad that Prime Minister Harper is trying to be realistic on the global warming issue. I have heard all kinds of talk both in favor of Kyoto and opposed. Everyone is coming down hard on President Bush but no one breathes down the other countries, namely China, who haven’t signed the accord. Everyone ought to stop bugging Bush and leave Harper alone. Let’s find out other viewpoints, namely viewpoints from the political right for a change. All we ever seem to hear from are leftist viewpoints. I am not defendiing the right, just let’s hear equally from both sides.

Alex Brown says:

Josh you are neglecting the fact that people are entitled to there own opinions. You knock the Great Global Warming Swindle and say it has red flags all over it when the exact same thing can be said for An Inconvenient Truth. Your opinion is your opinion, but keep an open mind towards others. Public opinion has not pushed Mr. Harper to take action. If he was doing just that he would have joined Kyoto, which would have crippled Canada’s currently booming economy. Work has been done to come up with a sensible plan for the environment in Canada that doesn’t hurt our country the way Kyoto would. I encourage you to look up the fraser institute, and read through ‘the politically incorrect guide to global warming and environmentalism’. Just an idea, to help keep the debate open…

Ray LePage says:

Today I watched a DVD by Michael Chrichton called “States of Fear” similar to his novel “State of Fear”. He points out that the geocentric theory of the universe was proven wrong; eugenics was another was proven wrong too. But these theories were accepted at the time just as the journalists and politicians are pushing that global warming is all our fault. A lot of this stuff is not real science but is driven by politics and people who have a vested interest in the theory. Fortunately there are scientists who do not believe in the theory but they have a hard time getting heard. Nobody seems to look on the bright side that our winters are not so severe and that the growing season is longer. What we need to do is to adapt. Remember Greenland once sustained a flourishing farming community. The trouble with journalism is that good news is not news — only bad news hits the front page. Good on Stephen Harper if he sticks by his guns. Leaders like Margaret Thatcher are in short supply.

The Kyoto Plan appeared to me as nothing more than a brilliant plan to slowly take over any signature coutry without raising an army or risking any soldier’s life. Since almost any aspect of our economy depends on energy thus some form of exhaoust/emmision, even agriculture with cows degassing (vegans allready brought this up), a country like Canada could easily loose its soveregnity to a clever and hidden group controlling the “greenhouse gas emission” agenda. I personally applaud Prime Misnister Sphen Harper for insisting on keeping controlls of this nation within this nation and under the DIRECT controll of its elected governement.

Kudos to Harper!! He is the only one who is truly standing up for environmental action by making it palatable and realistic. Sadly, the original lofty “Kyoto” ideals have now been reduced to a mindless religion for many. Why is it that Kyoto proponents like David Suzuki are never on the hook to explain the economic impacts of their zany suggestions??? Like simpletons, they persist that it must be Kyoto or nothing - when the truth is that there are other much more practical solutions (such as Harpers) out there!

20,000 years ago Nova Scotia was under ice, as demonstrated by the many boulders brought down to “Granite Village” from Ontario. They still remain as a reminder that the earth warmed up and the ice melted long before man began to pollute the air. There are many questions about global warming scientifically. Influence of the sun could have more to do with it. I could take Al Gore more seriously if it were not reported that the bill to heat his swimming pool at his mansion is $31,000. a year and he spends 2,750 a month for electricity - more than many Americans spend in a year - reported in the Wall Street journal. I hope Harper sticks to his agenda and doesn’t let our leftwing media push him around too much.

Good for you PM Harper . A huge victory for Canadians. The Kyoto Protocall and man made global warming will be remembered as this centuries greatest political scam. The Al Gore’s and David Suzkie’s of the world who make an incredible amout of wealth scaring the crap out of people with half truths and full out distortions of reality are finally getting exposed. What a treat to have a PM who has the grit to do what’s right for Canada instead of what appears to be popular with the “Politically Correct Gang “.
Finally, SHAME on Chretien for signing that Kyoto boondoggle in the first place and he didn’t even get the “Golden Throne” at the UN.

Global Warming is an environmental issue, wether it happened before or not.The countries that should concern themselfs with contributing a large percentage to the warming of our planet is India and China, this is to some degree quite obvious, but we all contribute no matter what. So please leave politics out of the decision making process and set your minds on more important things, i.e. easing the effect we all have on global warming.
For all you hyprocrites - stop Sunday shopping, quit using your gas powered lawnmowers, etc., start at your own places of residence and quit accusing others when you yourselfs do not do anything about it.

What really bothers me is your observation “. With most leaders from the eight powerhouse countries marching to the beat of Al Gore’s drum”. It is all political. It is the same as in our Federal and Provincial politics .. our Liberals .. Lefties and Leafies (the Green Guys) all dance to the same tune. They ignore .. innocently (I doubt it) or intentionally (I’m sure) .. the well reported and documented errors and/or omissions in Gore’s .. and Suzuki’s rhetoric. (they’re in if money – and each have done spectacularly in this respect) .. or power. If we had anyone but Harper over there .. we’d be ‘dancing to their tune’ as well. They all must allow science to take its’ rightful place in this debate.
