Senate Bill Delayed – Again!

One year seems like an awfully long time to pass a bill that is only three clauses long.  But when the bill in question (S-4) proposes to limit Senate terms to eight years, it is no wonder the dust collectors in the Upper House have pulled out every trick in the book to delay it.

This article in the Toronto Star highlights the latest delay tactic used in this ongoing debate. After receiving a submission from New Brunswick premier Shawn Graham, Liberal Senators have asked that all Canadian premiers weigh in on the bill.

Why?  Because Premier Graham argues that the term limits would change the essential character of the Upper House, and requires a constitutional amendment to be approved.

This is nothing more than an attempt to further stall Bill S-4, and to waste even more taxpayer dollars.  The Upper House has always been a retirement home for the political cronies of our elected leaders, passing Bill S-4 will not change that, it will simply leave less time for the dust to settle.

This is another exercise in democratic obstruction on the part of an anachronistic group of Senators dedicated to preserving their power and privilege.

Further, this completely ignores the fact that the provinces chose not to comment on the legislation.

The useless senators will fight to keep their appointed “golden” jobs. The Reform party suggested the use of a referendum to take issues like this to the people. Maybe thats what needs to happen here.
However, I wonder how much future senate reform will matter once the North American Union comes into effect in2010. There already exists a group representing Mexico, U.S. and Canada in discussions on how the new tri-national parliament will operate. This isn’t just liberal minded bung. Its a fact and we will be told within the next few years what will be expected of us. I wouldn’t pass liberal minded crap on to others because I don’t see myself as a liberal. Do a google search on Amero. The new currency we will have to accept, and see what you track down. This is more than just about freer trade, and a common currency which seems harmless in themselves, but do some research on some American sites like www.conservativeusa and see what you find. I hope Mr. Harper isn’t going to go along wholesale with this and sell our freedoms down the drain in the name of bigger corporate profits. Also take note in what research you do to see how communist China is investing heavily in the new super highway being currently worked on inTexas that will transport near slave labour goods from China throughout Canada. I think Canadians need to wake up and be aware of what is being processed behind the scenes and at least ask the Canadian government to debate this thoroughly in parliament, before we lose it .

Since existing Senators are grandfathered and since the traditional number of Senators are not changed from the 24 per region it is hard to figure out what Premier Graham is worried about except that he may want to become a Senator in the future and objects to an 8 year term. Since there is no mention of changing the proportion of Senators his concerns are without base. He may be worried that this measure is just a way to getting one’s foot in the door (which is true!). The cahnge to an 8 year term would bring in continual infusion of new blood which is an important apsect of politics. At least with the admendments a PM can still make patronage appointments but the cost will only be a little over a million per Senator instead about 3-4 million for a 20-25 year appointment.
